Nintendo Switch Online members now have three new Super Nintendo games to play, including one—Mario & Wario—that’s never been released outside of Japan until now. This 1993 puzzle-platformer is especially interesting because it was made by Game Freak, the studio that would later create Pokémon. Surprisingly, the game was always written in English, despite not being available in the US for over thirty years.
Okay, so I just saw the gameplay for Mario & Wario, and it looks like you actually need mouse controls! Apparently, Wario’s stuck a bucket on Mario’s head, and you play as this little forest fairy guiding him through 100 levels to get him unstuck. The cool thing is, if you’re playing on the new Switch 2, you can use the Joy-Cons sideways instead of needing a USB mouse like you did on the original Switch. It’s a neat way to handle the controls!
Nintendo Switch Online has added two more classic games: Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind and Fatal Fury Special. Playing Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind is a good way to experience the character before the release of Bubsy 4D. Fatal Fury Special is a fighting game where you can play as characters like Axel Hawk, who was previously a computer-controlled opponent in the original Fatal Fury 2.
Nintendo recently revealed that classic games from the Virtual Boy will be available to Switch Online + Expansion Pack members starting February 17th, but you’ll need a separate accessory to play them. Previously this year, owners of the Switch 2 with a Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription gained access to GameCube titles. A standard Switch Online membership costs $20 per year for one person or $35 for a family, while the Expansion Pack is $50 annually for individuals and $80 for families.
