Spoilers ahead for House season 4, episode 15, “House’s Head.”
As a movie enthusiast, I’d say that many episodes from the show “House” can be enjoyed independently without needing to delve into the entire plot. However, there’s one particularly striking scene in an iconic episode titled “House’s Head” that might leave newcomers intrigued and eager to watch more to understand its context. While “House’s Head” is undeniably significant within the series, it may not be fully appreciated until after viewers have watched the entirety of the show itself.
The show revolves around a socially detached physician who has a dependency on Vicodin and harbors disdain towards his patients, yet finds joy in the diagnostic journey. Typically, episodes followed a similar pattern, with the main character, portrayed by Hugh Laurie, solving the medical mystery and ultimately rescuing the day.
However, certain unique episodes of the television series “House” – like “House’s Head” and “Wilson’s Head” – deviated significantly from the usual format, surprising us with unexpected plot twists that left even casual viewers yearning to rewatch the entire show from its beginning to end.
House’s Amber Realization Is The Show’s Biggest Plot Twist
House Realizes The Truth At The End Of “House’s Head”
In the episode titled “House’s Head,” the character House is part of a bus accident. He recalls very little about the incident. However, what he does remember is a critically ill patient and his frantic attempts to identify the person. As he resorts to increasingly drastic methods, his memories start returning piece by piece. In a tragic turn of events, he discovers too late that the patient was none other than Amber.
In the course of the episode, the house undergoes a string of unsettling illusions where a woman identified as The Answer keeps querying him, “What material is your necklace?” Towards the end, just before the credits roll, he suddenly discerns that her necklace is amber, causing The Answer to metamorphose into Amber Volakis. This revelation provides House with the clue about who’s on the verge of death.
House’s Most Tragic Scene Makes No Sense Without Context
The Twist Still Gets A Lot Of People Into Watching House
A Telyhouse social media post misinterpreted an “amber” reference from House, presenting the scene where House understands The Answer’s message. This post sparked reactions from new House fans who had begun watching just to uncover the mystery of the amber necklace. However, this surprising twist may not make sense to fresh viewers.
In the upcoming episode titled “Wilson’s Heart,” Amber’s demise serves as a pivotal moment for the series, prompting House to grapple with his self-centeredness. Initially, Amber was going to fetch House, but her untimely death on a bus significantly impacted his bond with Wilson. Although they eventually reconcile, the haunting specter of Amber’s passing continues to linger in their lives for the rest of the show.
“House’s Head” And “Wilson’s Heart” Are Masterpieces In Tension
The Tragic Two-Episode Arc Pulls Off A Difficult Storytelling Feat
The series, particularly, is filled with tense situations, yet the two-episode tale about Amber stands out as one of the show’s finest pieces of writing. Watching the typically confident House grapple to find solutions and race against the clock to save Amber is a memorable scene in the series. However, it’s heartbreaking to know that by the time they understood everything, Amber was destined to perish.
In the series known as House, I found myself to be quite a contentious character, a fact that left many, including Dr. House himself, rather taken aback. It was unexpected for both the audience and the characters when Dr. Wilson disclosed his relationship with me. Transforming an unpopular persona into one that evokes sympathy is no easy task, but the writers managed to make my death the most heart-wrenching in the series – a remarkable achievement in storytelling and one of the show’s finest moments.
