This summer, one of the standout and creatively innovative Metroidvania games from last year will be making its way into a physical release. Known as Crypt Custodian, it’s one of the rare games in this genre that is played from a top-down perspective. Set to drop on August 29 for both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, this game was initially available as a $20 digital-exclusive title across all console platforms and PC. Like many physical releases today, Crypt Custodian will not be coming to Xbox. For those eager to get their hands on the physical copy, preorders are now being accepted at Amazon or Walmart.
The game Crypt Custodian, created by Kyle Thompson (known for Islets and Sheepo), offers a fresh twist on metroidvania gameplay. Unlike its predecessors that were side-scrollers, this new release adopts a top-down view similar to Hyper Light Drifter and classic Zelda titles. In Crypt Custodian, players step into the shoes of Pluto, a cat who died and now works as a janitor in the afterlife. The game boasts an expansive, interconnected world ripe for exploration, complete with collectibles, hidden treasures, and formidable bosses to conquer. Additionally, players will assist other spirits trapped in limbo by completing various side quests throughout their journey.
If you’re in search of tangible copies of contemporary indie Metroidvania games, the trippy side-scrolling game Ultros will also be physically released for Nintendo Switch on August 28, and preorders can be made right away. A physical version of Ultros for PS5 has already been launched and is accessible now, featuring a Deluxe Edition that comes with three art cards, magnets, a digital artbook, digital soundtrack, and more.
It’s important to mention that the editions of games Crypt Custodian and Ultros for Nintendo Switch can also be played on the upcoming Switch 2, which launches on June 5, thanks to its backward compatibility feature.
