This Actor Was Supposed to Play Chandler in Friends. For A Long Time He Couldn’t Cope with The Success of Matthew Perry

As a dedicated gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but draw parallels between my own gaming journey and Matthew Perry‘s experience with the role of Chandler in “Friends.” I remember feeling that same sense of longing and disappointment when I missed out on a highly coveted game or role in a guild.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always felt a strong connection to Chandler from “Friends,” originally named “Friends Like Us.” But unfortunately, despite my deep-rooted affection for the character, I couldn’t pursue it for a prolonged period due to other commitments. At that time, I was already deeply involved in another sitcom project titled “L.A.X. 2194,” an intriguing futuristic story centered around the daily lives of airport baggage handlers. I had even shot the pilot episode for it. Consequently, I found myself unable to go after the role that felt tailor-made for me.

Despite his strong attachment to “Friends Like Us,” he found it difficult to shake the notion, more so since Craig Bierko was given the chance to portray Chandler and another significant role in “Best Friends.” In a dilemma over which offer to accept, Bierko sought Perry’s counsel. Contrarily, Perry, despite his own aspirations for the Chandler role, advised his friend to pursue “Friends Like Us,” believing it to be the superior choice. Amazingly, Bierko ended up choosing “Best Friends,” making the Chandler part available.

The three of us – Bierko, Perry, and Hank Azaria – reviewed those two scripts that morning. I had memorized “Friends Like Us” prior, but it was evident which role Craig should claim. I felt disheartened because I recognized myself as Chandler, yet I wasn’t a jerk. We encouraged Craig to go with “Friends Like Us.”

Perry lost out on the role in “L.A.X. 2194” and became available shortly after, as the pilot wasn’t picked up for production and no one was interested in turning it into a TV series. Consequently, Perry auditioned for and landed the part of Chandler, which later turned out to be a hugely successful TV show. In response, Bierko reportedly felt jealous and mentioned this during an interview with Policy & Politics. Two years after their sudden falling out of contact, a friend of Perry’s expressed remorse for not reaching out and shared, “I’m sorry I haven’t contacted you in two years. I couldn’t bear that you became wealthy from a show that I declined.”

Based on Perry’s statement, it seems that Bierko didn’t just accept his friend’s achievements and his own mistakes quietly. Instead, he aimed to revive a forgotten TV series.
