In February 2021, Electronic Arts stopped working on a project called Anthem Next, effectively concluding its production. Interestingly, you can still play the game without encountering any issues because the servers are operational. However, this situation is temporary, as the publisher has recently declared that Anthem will come to an end by the start of next year.
We’ve got some significant news about Anthem. After thorough deliberation, we have decided to retire, or sunset, the game on January 12, 2026. This implies that you can continue playing online for more than six months from today. As of now, you cannot buy premium in-game currency anymore, but you can still spend your remaining balance until the servers are turned off.
Is it unexpected to anyone that this announcement was made? It appears to me that no, and based on the players’ remarks, a significant number of them weren’t even aware that Anthem was still in development.
Wait a minute! Is this game still on? I thought they turned it off years ago.
If you’ve been wanting to play BioWare’s game “Anthem”, now is the time to do so since it will no longer be available for download after January 12, 2026. This is because the game was specifically designed as an online title and does not have an offline mode, as Electronic Arts (EA) emphasized.
Since “Anthem” is only available as an online game without an offline mode, EA has announced that it will be taken offline permanently on January 12, 2026, so if you’re interested in playing it, now is the time to do so before it disappears.
If you prefer using EA Play for your gaming needs, you should note that Anthem will be taken off Xbox Game Pass ahead of schedule on August 15th this year. Interestingly, the company mentioned that despite ending the Anthem project, it did not result in any job losses.
It’s tough not to observe that EA’s announcement fell in line with the triumph of the Stop Killing Games campaign, which strives to persuade publishers to keep their games playable. Whether or not anyone will mourn the demise of Anthem, it would be gratifying if EA opted to incorporate an offline mode into the game, allowing us to revisit it at our leisure.
