In recent times, jokes about April Fool’s Day pranks in the gaming world are becoming reality more frequently. This happens either because companies choose to release as genuine products what were initially just jokes, or they use this “holiday” for announcing new products. It can get a bit puzzling, but when it comes to CRKD’s limited-edition Goat Simulator controllers, you need only look to believe. They are indeed real, and their unique designs and vibrant artwork make them quite a spectacle – something both interesting to gaze upon and comfortable to handle.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Goat Simulator franchise, CRKD has redesigned its Nitro Deck for Switch and the NEO S controller for Switch, mobile devices, and PC, giving them a goat theme. This includes the character’s distinctive stretchy tongue being featured prominently on both gamepads. These controllers might be familiar to you from previous limited-edition collections like the CRKD Fortnite series launched earlier this year or the Fortnite Festival edition catering to music enthusiasts.
The Nitro Deck serves as a holding station where you slide your Nintendo Switch screen. It works with both the standard Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch OLED model. The dock, using its USB-C connection, firmly secures the screen in position. In an attempt to test it out, I gave mine a good shake, but fortunately, it didn’t budge.
For the first time, I tried out the Nitro Deck, available in various versions, some of which are mentioned below if you didn’t catch them earlier. Now, I’ve made the Nitro Deck my go-to option on the Nintendo Switch, and so has my daughter who is a die-hard Goat Sim fan. Its design resembles the Steam Deck, particularly with its four customizable back buttons similar to those found on Steam’s handheld device. Although it’s more substantial than a typical Switch, it’s not too large for my children to handle comfortably.
Simultaneously, the larger buttons on the Nitro Deck seem more intuitive compared to the official Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. To be honest, I’m not planning on returning to that style of Nintendo Switch gaming. At $50, the Nitro Deck offers a more mature-friendly design without neglecting smaller hands.
The Bluetooth-equipped NEO S gamepad might be an acquired preference, yet my daughter has swiftly embraced it for her portable gaming sessions. Similar to many others, she was pleased to move away from touch controls. With a rectangular shape reminiscent of a horizontally held thick smartphone, the NEO S felt too compact for my liking, but I appreciate having it in our home as a specialized mobile controller for my children, thus saving my own controllers from occasional disconnections multiple times weekly.
This gadget was designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch, so you might find that its face buttons follow Nintendo’s standard arrangement: Y, A, B, and X in a clockwise pattern from the top. If you’re more accustomed to Xbox’s controller layout, which is commonly used on PCs, this could be a change for you. Other mobile controllers like Razer Kishi and Backbone have opted for the Xbox map, but the NEO S stays true to Nintendo’s design. For devoted Switch players, this shouldn’t pose an issue, but your personal preference might differ. At $60, it comes with a charging dock and offers two customizable back buttons.
Although the CRKD-exclusive Goat Simulator Nitro Deck and NEO S models can only be purchased from CRKD’s official site, various other recently released editions, such as multiple Fortnite versions, are available on Amazon.
