Back in the day, Atari games were among the pioneers that moved from arcade machines to home video game systems. Today, a limited number of revamped versions of those classic Atari games will be making their way onto AirConsole, a unique car-centric entertainment and gaming platform.
In collaboration, AirConsole and Atari have made it possible to play Asteroids Recharged and Breakout Charged on the in-car entertainment systems of certain Volkswagen models. To enjoy these games, you’ll need an active VW Connect Plus subscription and a smartphone with internet access. Important to note: the games can only be played when the vehicle is stationary. By scanning the provided QR codes, your phone transforms into a controller for the AirConsole games.
According to Atari’s vice president of games, Ethan Stearns, the AirConsole team has consistently excelled at refining vehicle controls and creating exceptional gaming experiences. We can’t wait for Volkswagen drivers and their passengers to experience the updated editions of our popular classic games.
In due time, Atari plans to include Missile Command: Recharged in their AirConsole collection, though no further game titles were specified. Meanwhile, AirConsole is collaborating with automakers such as Audi and BMW, yet at present, the Atari games are accessible only through Volkswagen vehicles.
This year, it was revealed by Atari that they will release a modernized adaptation of the 1984 arcade game I, Robot, and Breakout Beyond, a revamped version initially slated for Intellivision’s Amico, a console still pending its debut.
