Pixar is known for beloved and groundbreaking animated films like Toy Story and Inside Out. Though Pixar and Disney often work together, Disney has also created many animated movies independently. Unfortunately, some of these excellent films haven’t received the recognition they deserve and have faded from memory.
Even though people don’t remember all of Disney’s older animated movies, many of them are just as good – or even better – than some of Pixar’s biggest successes. While Disney and Pixar often work together and are seen as one and the same, Disney still has some truly excellent animated films that can compete with the most popular Pixar titles.
Bolt Helped Revitalize the Walt Disney Animation Studios
Bolt is a 2008 animated film featuring John Travolta as the voice of Bolt, a White Swiss Shepherd dog who became famous as the star of a TV show. However, Bolt believes his life on set was real. When he finally experiences the world outside the studio, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
Bolt is a heartwarming and funny movie about growing up. Featuring John Travolta and the voice of Miley Cyrus as Penny, Bolt’s owner, it played a key role in bringing new life to Walt Disney Animation Studios. Its success paved the way for popular films like Tangled and Frozen.
Brother Bear Remains an Underrated Classic
Released in 2003, Disney’s Brother Bear tells the story of Kenai, who deeply dislikes bears, especially after he believes one caused his brother’s death. After killing a bear, Kenai is magically transformed into one himself. The movie then follows his adventure as he seeks to become human again and learns to understand and appreciate the animal world.
While critics gave Brother Bear a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is remembered for its heartwarming message of respect for animals and the natural world. It’s considered a hidden gem among Disney movies, with a quality that rivals the beloved Tarzan.
The Great Mouse Detective Depicts One of the Greatest Fictional Detectives
The Disney film centers on Basil, a clever detective based on Baker Street, and his mission to rescue Olivia’s father, who has been kidnapped by the villainous Professor Ratigan. Basil teams up with Dr. David Q. Dawson, mirroring the famous Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson duo.
After a previous movie didn’t perform well, The Great Mouse Detective was important in keeping Disney’s animation studio going. It’s a fun, adventurous story that playfully references Sherlock Holmes, and its villain, Professor Ratigan, is considered one of the most frightening in Disney animation. Though it’s sometimes overlooked, The Great Mouse Detective is still a top-notch Disney classic.
Treasure Planet Is Now a Cult Classic
Treasure Planet is a futuristic take on the classic story Treasure Island. This Disney animated movie follows Jim Hawkins on a space journey to find Captain Flint’s hidden treasure, but the voyage quickly turns into an adventure when the crew rebels.
Despite costing $140 million to make and only earning $109 million at the box office, Treasure Planet received good reviews. While many have forgotten it over time, the film developed a dedicated fan base who truly understood and loved its unique science fiction take on a classic story.
The Jungle Book Was Walt Disney’s Last Film Before His Death
The Jungle Book is a lively musical film inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s story of a child growing up with jungle animals. It was the last Disney film Walt Disney personally oversaw, as he passed away while it was being made. However, because it shared some similarities with Disney’s Tarzan, The Jungle Book was often overshadowed.
While The Jungle Book and Tarzan share some similarities in their stories and characters, The Jungle Book is unique. The Disney version especially focuses on Mowgli growing up and realizing he needs to leave the jungle to live with humans, and discovering who he is along the way.
The Black Cauldron Was Too Dark For Its Time
The Black Cauldron is an animated movie adapted from Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain books. Though considered a cult classic today, it wasn’t a success when it was first released and nearly caused Disney to shut down its animation studio. As a result, it’s largely been forgotten over time.
Despite not being widely remembered, The Black Cauldron is actually a very strong Disney film. Its adventurous and often dangerous story features a truly frightening villain, and it’s so well-made that it could compete with today’s Pixar movies. It really deserves more recognition.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire Was Misunderstood When It Was First Released
The movie centers around Milo and his team’s adventure to find the legendary city of Atlantis. It was a groundbreaking Disney animated film for its heavy use of computer-generated imagery, representing a departure from the more traditional musical style of films like Mulan and Hercules, which came out just a few years earlier.
While Atlantis: The Lost Empire didn’t initially perform well in theaters or receive overwhelmingly positive reviews, it’s gained a strong following over time. People are now recognizing its exciting action, captivating story, and surprisingly complex themes. It may be a forgotten Disney film for some, but it truly stands out as something different.
