There’s a simple reason 1923 Season 3 won’t happen

Despite the fact that we haven’t reached the end of the second season, enthusiasts of Yellowstone are already pondering whether there could be a third season of 1923.

Taylor Sheridan’s show lifespans exhibit some variation. For example, 1883 was a one-time, limited season series. Conversely, shows like Lioness and Tulsa King have already aired their second and third seasons, while Yellowstone has reached its fifth season.

1923 defied the usual pattern for Yellowstone prequels by being renewed for a second season in February 2025, and it’s evident that many more chapters are yet to unfold in its narrative.

It seems like Taylor Sheridan may be working on new projects. However, it’s worth considering if we might need to bid farewell to Taylor, Spencer, and the rest of the characters soon. Here’s what we currently know.

Will there be a 1923 Season 3?

Although no official announcement has been made about a third season, indications from Taylor Sheridan and the cast suggest that 1923 may consist of just two seasons.

Sheridan referred to Season 2 as “the continuation” or “the second part” of Season 1, suggesting it might mark the conclusion for the Dutton family lineage in the series.

In 2023, he explained to Deadline that unlike in 1883 when everything was already planned out, this time he had no clear idea of how he would approach it.”

Or, more casually:

“Back in 1883, I knew exactly what I was doing. But for this, I had no clue,” he shared with Deadline in 2023.

Recently, I embarked on a personal adventure and it was me who contacted the network with what might be their most significant call yet. To conclude this engaging tale, I believe additional episodes are necessary. I plan to produce these in two installments: an initial set of eight episodes followed by another set of eight to tie up loose ends.

It’s not feasible for me to condense this story into just two episodes. It benefits them by providing additional content, while I gain extra time to develop the narrative further.

Back in 2023, Brandon Sklenar, who portrays Spencer Dutton, shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the two seasons of their show could be viewed as a single continuous story.

He clarified, “What I’m referring to is a single, continuous entity that’s been divided down the middle. Despite its limitations, it remains whole and will ultimately bring everything to an end.

1944 will keep the Dutton story going

Given that a new prequel titled “1944” is underway, it’s reasonable to expect that we’ll learn about the fate of the characters from “1923” approximately two decades later, assuming all goes as planned.

It’s likely that the upcoming season will introduce fresh characters, including potential heir John Dutton II, but given the storyline’s timeline, there’s a possibility we might encounter older versions of Spencer, Alex, Jack, and Liz, or learn the conclusions to their stories.

The ranch’s heritage will additionally be expanded upon by them. While we anticipate the Duttons overcoming Donald Whitfield in some way, the forthcoming prequel may provide insights into the challenges and victories they experienced during those years, thereby offering viewers a better understanding of their history.

Though, given the Great Depression setting, it’s more likely to include troubles.
