TheOdd1sOut, an animator, YouTuber, and creator of a Netflix show, has addressed claims that he unexpectedly fired a large portion of his animation staff with very little notice.
James ‘TheOdd1sOut’ has been creating videos on YouTube since 2014. He’s known for funny, animated shorts where he usually represents himself as a basic, white-colored character, and covers a wide range of topics.
He initially created animations for his videos himself, but as his channel became more popular, he hired freelance artists to assist with the work. Then, on March 5, 2026, an artist shared a message on Discord stating that all of the channel’s animators had been laid off.
I’m sharing some difficult news: the whole team at TheOdd1sOut has been let go, and that means I’ve lost my primary income. With tax season and an upcoming move right around the corner, I’ll be focusing on taking commissions full-time from now on.

The message spread rapidly online, leading viewers to question and criticize the YouTuber’s sudden changes. Several other animators also revealed they had been let go from the team.
TheOdd1sOut makes comment after firing animation staff
TheOdd1sOut addressed the situation the following day with a detailed statement, clarifying that he didn’t suddenly fire his animators. He explained he had individual conversations with each staff member he let go and also provided severance packages to all his full-time freelancers.
He explained that he reduced his team size because he only released three videos in 2025, and his team was too large for the amount of content he was creating.
TheOdd1sOut announced that he continues to work with an animation team and that artists contributing to upcoming videos will be properly credited for their work.
He expressed frustration with how the situation was portrayed online, saying it seemed unnecessarily hostile. He explained he’d done everything he could to support his artists.
This wasn’t a simple experience. Leading a big creative team is a huge responsibility, and I did everything I could to support and treat my colleagues well.
I made a difficult decision to let some artists go because I didn’t have any projects or consistent work for them, and it wouldn’t be fair to keep them waiting. My priority is always what’s best for the team, and I’m sorry if this came as a surprise. I really struggled with this decision, but without other opportunities available, it felt like the right thing to do.

Viewers have had varying reactions, with some doubting TheOdd1sOut’s statements about personally speaking with each artist who was fired. This skepticism arises because many of the animators who lost their jobs say they weren’t given any advance notice.
Some people think the initial negative responses were exaggerated, claiming that critics are overreacting to the news.
So far, TheOdd1’sOut hasn’t said anything else publicly about this, even after being asked about it.
