‘The X-Files’ Star David Duchovny Confirms There Have Been “Talks” of Reboot Return

Whenever a popular show or movie is brought back, people immediately start guessing which parts of the original will return, and The X-Files is no different. The sci-fi series is a ’90s classic with a rich history that could continue for many years in different forms. But beyond the overall story, the show’s success also relied on its main characters, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

Ryan Coogler is working on a new series, but details about how it connects to the original show are still unclear. Gillian Anderson recently mentioned she’s read scripts and believes the series will be fantastic, which has now prompted David Duchovny to discuss his potential involvement. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Duchovny confirmed there have been discussions about him appearing in the series, but he didn’t share any specific details.

There have been talks about certain things, but there’s nothing concrete at this point.”

Duchovny confirmed he hasn’t actually read any of the scripts that Anderson has seen, though he’s spoken with Ryan and has a basic understanding of the project. While discussions about potential storylines are encouraging, Duchovny admitted he’s largely in the dark about the details. He doesn’t know what the new show’s premise is or if his character would even be involved, saying everything is still just speculation and he can’t comment on it meaningfully.

Despite the exciting possibilities of bringing the show back, many are questioning if a revival is truly necessary. The series was hugely popular in the 1990s, leading to a feature film, The X-Files: Fight the Future, and a crossover episode with The Simpsons. But ratings declined towards the end, and David Duchovny left the show. Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish joined the cast briefly before the series ended with its ninth season.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson teamed up again in 2008 for the film The X-Files: Trust No One, which received a mixed response. They later returned for a six-episode tenth season in 2016. While the revival satisfied longtime fans, the short season length required balancing new storylines with honoring the show’s history. The season’s success led to an eleven-episode Season 11, but its plot twists disappointed many, including Anderson, who has expressed reluctance to continue with the series unless fresh creative voices are brought on board.

Ryan Coogler clearly loves the original series and will likely stay true to what made it great. As a talented and award-winning director, he’s probably the best person to try and revive it. However, given how many previous attempts have failed, it’s possible this franchise is best left untouched.
