The World Ends With You series director Tatsuya Kando has left Square Enix

Tatsuya Kando shared on his personal platform that he parted ways with Square Enix at the end of May 2025. Notably, while working there, he was renowned for his role as director of the popular “The World Ends With You” series.

Kando has been employed at the company for a total of 29 years, starting as early as 1996, well before Square combined with Enix in 2003. Apart from the TWEWY series that debuted in 2021, he was also instrumental in creating the Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy franchises. Kando’s last known public engagement occurred in 2024, during an interview discussing his contribution to the crossover content for FuRyu’s Reynatis within TWEWY.

Despite no longer being employed by Square Enix, Kando has pledged via his tweets that he’ll stay active within the industry and keep producing content.
