‘The Wizard of Oz’ to Screen at the Sphere as a ‘Fully Immersive Experience’

“The Wizard of Oz” is taking the Yellow Brick Road to the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Sphere Entertainment Company is unveiling two fresh undertakings – “The Wizard of Oz at Sphere” and “From the Edge” – both in active development by Sphere Studios. These ventures are integral components of Sphere’s collection of unique, immersive content known as The Sphere Experience.

Jim Dolan, the executive chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, stated that our aim for The Sphere Experience is a varied selection that fully utilizes Sphere’s capabilities as an immersive platform. ‘The Wizard of Oz at Sphere’ and ‘From the Edge’ will help realize this goal by offering distinct perspectives.”

Or simply:

“Jim Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, explained that our ambition for The Sphere Experience is a diverse lineup that maximizes Sphere’s potential as an immersive medium. ‘The Wizard of Oz at Sphere’ and ‘From the Edge’ will contribute to this goal by offering unique approaches.

In a unique partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, Google, and Magnopus, “The Wizard of Oz” (originally released in 1939) featuring Judy Garland as Dorothy, will be brought to life as an immersive experience within the Sphere. By utilizing state-of-the-art technologies, this production aims to heighten the film while preserving the authenticity of the original story, all while exploring the limits of Sphere’s experiential capabilities.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the team behind “The Wizard of Oz at Sphere” is nothing short of stellar. This talented ensemble includes producer Jane Rosenthal, who brought “The Irishman” to life on screen, visual effects wizard Ben Grossman, known for his magic in “Hugo,” the gifted editor Jennifer Lame, whose work graced “Oppenheimer,” and the creative visionary Zack Winokur, whose touch can be felt in “Little Island.” Each of these individuals brings their unique expertise to create a cinematic experience that promises to be unforgettable.

In the meantime, “From the Edge” showcases five elite athletes: free diver Alenka Artnik, skier Markus Eder, rock climber Alex Honnold, BASE jumper Katie Hansen Lajeunesse, and surfer Kai Lenny. This production, directed by E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (“Free Solo”), offers a behind-the-scenes look at the thrilling realm of extreme sports.

Five athletes are being filmed on-site using Blue Sky’s specialized camera technology, designed to capture high-resolution images suitable for the Sphere’s screen. At present, filming is taking place in various locations, including Jordan, Dubai, Switzerland, the Bahamas, Austin, Las Vegas, and Maui.

As a film enthusiast, I’d like to share that the gripping movie titled “From the Edge” is a joint production by Vsarhelyi, Chin, their company Little Monster Films, Evan Hayes, and Callum Greene. The executive producers for this project are Anna Barnes from Little Monster Films and Nick Martini from Stept Studios.

The production titled “The Wizard of Oz at Sphere” is scheduled to premiere on August 28th, and the show named “From the Edge” has been planned for release in the year 2026.
