‘The Wild Robot’ Beats ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ at International Box Office

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has seen more films than I can count and followed the box office trends for years, it’s evident that “Joker: Folie á Deux” is facing a bit of a challenge at the international box office. Despite its impressive performance overseas compared to domestic sales, it’s clear that the expectations weren’t met, leaving the film struggling to break even, given its hefty production and marketing costs.

As a movie buff, I’m observing that “Joker: Folie à Deux” isn’t picking up steam quite as expected at the international box office. In just its second weekend, it managed to earn $22.6 million across 77 territories.

Despite outperforming domestically by earning $51 million compared to $113 million overseas, the film’s box office performance is significantly lower than anticipated, totaling $165.3 million globally. The sequel from Warner Bros., which cost a hefty $200 million to produce (not forgetting the additional $100 million for marketing and other distribution costs), is finding it difficult to maintain pace with the necessary $450 million in sales just to break even, as suggested by industry insiders. Contrastingly, the 2019 release of “Joker” was a massive hit, earning $335 million domestically and an impressive $743 million overseas for a staggering global total of $1.078 billion. This film had a much lower production budget of approximately $60 million, making it highly profitable as well.

The sequel to “Joker”, titled “Joker 2”, made its premiere in Japan over the weekend, raking in approximately $2.4 million. It is set to be released in China on October 16th, marking its next significant market. As of now, the United Kingdom leads as the highest-grossing overseas market with a total of $11.8 million, followed closely by Germany at $7.9 million, Italy at $7.6 million, Mexico at $7.4 million, and France at $7.1 million. Audiences who have watched “Joker 2” in theaters have preferred premium viewing experiences, with Imax accounting for $13.5 million in worldwide ticket sales.

The earnings for the “Joker” sequel were not as high as those of “The Wild Robot” by Universal and DreamWorks Animation, which climbed to the top spot among Hollywood releases, earning $24.1 million from 55 territories over the weekend. This critically acclaimed family film has accumulated a total of $64.7 million overseas and $148 million worldwide so far. The studio is gradually releasing “The Wild Robot” internationally, with plans to open it in more markets in the near future.
