‘The White Lotus’ or ‘Squid Game’? Breaking Down the Top Contenders for the Best Drama Series Emmy

On the Award Circuit presented by Paramount+, editors Michael Schneider and Emily Longeretta from EbMaster TV are discussing the frontrunners vying for the Best Drama category at this year’s Emmy Awards.

Following “Shogun” dominating the Emmys in 2024, this year’s competition is up for grabs. However, one potential leader in the pack is the second season of Apple TV+’s “Severance”.

In 2022, the show received 14 nominations, winning two Emmys. The drama series was nominated in categories such as writing, directing, casting, and more. The talented cast, which included Patricia Arquette, Adam Scott, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, among others, were all recognized. Therefore, Longeretta believes that while nothing is ever a certain win, this year’s Emmys could very well be a sure thing.

In the second season of “The Last of Us,” high expectations are set, yet surprisingly, Pedro Pascal’s character Joel meets his end already in the second episode.

2023 marked the impressive debut of this television series, earning a stunning 24 nominations across various categories. To my delight, it bagged eight Emmy Awards, truly ruling the roost. The previous season saw exceptional guest performances by Nick Offerman and Storm Reid, both of whom took home awards. However, it was also recognized in prestigious categories such as drama series, directing, casting, and writing. Given this recognition, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, our esteemed leads, were acknowledged, even though Pascal’s status as the main star may have shifted somewhat, according to Schneider.

Longeretta remarked, “It’s generating a conversation that’s sticking around longer than usual, as the series will continue running till the conclusion of the voting phase. This gives it an edge since it airs towards the end of the year.

In addition to these others, you’ll find “The Pitt,” “The White Lotus,” “Slow Horses,” “Squid Game,” “The Diplomat,” and “Paradise” (and a few more) in the running as well.
