The fate of on Prime Video has been revealed. Unfortunately for fans, it’s not good news at all.
According to recent reports, it seems that the popular series, “The Wheel of Time”, has unfortunately been terminated after completing three seasons. The program had faced uncertainty since its third season ended in April. The decision to discontinue the series is said to have resulted from extensive discussions, but the substantial cost of producing “The Wheel of Time” was the primary factor leading to this choice. Despite Amazon executives having always appreciated the show creatively.
2021 saw the beginning of “The Wheel of Time” with a strong debut, breaking records as the most-watched series premiere of the year and ranking among the Top 5 series launches ever on Prime Video. However, despite maintaining a steady audience, viewership hasn’t reached the initial heights. After three weeks into Season 3, the show dropped off Nielsen’s Top 10 Original streaming chart, a position it had consistently held for both seasons prior. Interestingly, “The Wheel of Time” reappeared on the Nielsen chart following its Season 3 finale, but only at No. 10, suggesting a decline that led Amazon executives to question whether a fourth season would be financially viable.
Essentially, the creators of “The Wheel of Time” knew that a Season 4 wasn’t a given. However, they structured this potential final season to be able to wrap up the TV series, while keeping the possibility of continuing the story alive. Regrettably, it’s disappointing for many fans to see the show end in this manner when it appeared to be gaining momentum. Although the number of viewers was decreasing, the reviews were improving with each passing season. The Rotten Tomatoes score for Season 3 stands at a high of 97%, compared to 81% for Season 1 and 86% for Season 2.
Rafe Judkins, the showrunner of “Wheel of Time,” previously explained to THR why they chose Amazon for the series. He stated that Amazon seemed like a platform that is committed to long-term investments in shows, which is becoming increasingly rare these days. In essence, he felt it was essential for “Wheel of Time” to be on a platform that values long-term projects instead of just seeking short-term attention. The series and the books improve as they progress, and Judkins believes they could continue this growth if given the chance, making it beneficial not just for their project but also for television in general as it allows them to excel at what they do best.
The Wheel of Time is streaming (in its entirety) on Prime Video.
