The Way Home’s Elliot: A Liar Hiding Family Secrets?

Elliot’s deeply ingrained habits make it hard to believe anything else, but I’m certain he’s hiding something about his family’s past. We got a glimpse of that when we saw him in “The Way Home.” It’s like a leopard can’t shake off its natural patterns; Elliot seems just as unchanging.

Port Haven shines brightest when Del, Kat, and Alice are our leading characters. Our intricate time travel stories revolve around them, and their curiosity about the past is impossible to ignore. However, there’s also Elliot who fiercely holds onto the Landry family, seeing them as the only reliable support he has left.

Born an Augustine, Elliot’s life is fragmented – both past and present. He’s successfully secured Kat, but Vic, his father, unexpectedly reappears with startling news (details to follow). A quick online search about him and The Way Home reveals: “He has a reputation for deceiving and hiding information from those close to him, especially Kat. This behavior stems from his belief that he knows what’s best for her, yet it frequently leads to complications.

A fundamental issue that we should have addressed earlier is the fact that, despite how charming he may seem or our hopes for him and Kat, Elliot is undeniably dishonest. His moment to prove himself will likely come in Season 4; however, I’m skeptical about accepting anything he says. In truth, his past actions have given us a clear indication of this.

We never saw Jacob take Elliot to the pond in The Way Home

It’s important to face the truth: From the beginning, Elliot has been dishonest about various matters. He fabricated stories about Alice being a time traveler, he deceived us about kissing his ex-wife Emma, and he misled us about meeting up with Nick. In fact, he’s lied so frequently that viewers predicted he might become the show’s antagonist over a year ago.

At his best, he tends to avoid direct answers. He’s a cooperative team member when necessary for a larger cause, but typically functions as a part of the system rather than leading it. However, this dynamic shifted significantly upon Thomas’ return in Season 3, which I believe shed light on truths we had previously overlooked.

If it’s not clear, Thomas was Kat’s romantic interest during the 1800s. Essentially, she found herself in a love triangle involving him and Elliot, ultimately ending their relationship permanently in Episode 9.

Following Kat’s return to 1816 to aid Elijah in dealing with the aftermath of the fire, she finds herself outside the farm at the same time as Thomas. Tears fall from her eyes, and Elliot appears, passionately kissing her. He reveals that Jacob had brought him to 1816, and he has since returned to their present day.

Apart from the fact that we’ve never witnessed Jacob engaging in such an action ourselves, our knowledge about this situation comes solely from what Elliot has shared with us. We did encounter Jacob during the Landry Farm fire in 1816, but he was not seen by us after that incident. Therefore, I propose a question for your consideration: might it be possible that Elliot is also telling untruths in this particular instance?

If my assumption holds true, it significantly alters the interpretation of the Season 3 finale and the series as a whole. If Jacob didn’t transport Elliot to the pond, then it’s plausible that Elliot is none other than Landry himself (since only Landrys possess time-travel abilities). This hypothesis could shed light on Elliot’s mother’s situation, but more importantly, it implies that everything we thought we knew about Elliot up to this point might need to be reconsidered.

First things first, let’s focus on Elliot’s mother. She is a newcomer to us, having only interacted briefly with Alice in the year 1974. At the end of Season 3, Vic sent a letter to Elliot revealing that she didn’t abandon him; instead, she left him behind to journey through time with a man from the Landry family, who has yet to be identified. Alternatively, she could have been leaving with someone else, which suggests she might actually be a member of the Landry family herself.

If this plan works out, Elliot might manage to travel independently. However, it also raises doubts about his honesty. Everything he says he’s learned, discovered, or was surprised by could actually be things he’s already familiar with. Remember, he imitated Sam’s ominous Season 3 ending in Season 1, standing by the pond and hinting at knowing more about it vaguely.

In my view, it’s crucial to keep a close eye on him during The Way Home Season 4. To be honest, I wouldn’t believe him even if he were standing right in front of me, and I’m a woman who often finds myself in intense situations during pilates. It seems clear that he’s connected to something far larger than himself… but I have my doubts about how truthful Elliot is being when it comes to the specifics.
