What is The Waterfront about?
Developed by Kevin Williamson, “The Waterfront” is an eight-part storyline situated in the turbulent coastal town of Havenport, North Carolina. It follows the Buckley clan as they strive to reclaim their dominance over their fishing business.
According to Netflix, for generations, the Buckley family had a tight grip on the town’s fishing industry and dining establishments. However, as the family patriarch, Harlan Buckley, struggles with his health, the once formidable dynasty starts to show signs of decay.
In simpler terms, Belle, his spouse, and their impulsive son Cane are taking drastic steps to safeguard their inheritance. Meanwhile, Bree, struggling with addiction, is trying to put her life back together. However, a potentially harmful relationship could further entangle them all in turmoil.
When their efforts start spinning wildly off course and heading towards dangerous seas, Harlan re-enters the situation to regain control.
Regarding the fresh TV series, Williamson – known for producing Dawson’s Creek and The Vampire Diaries – mentioned that the story revolves around discovering the “least harmful” option within difficult circumstances.
He explained to Tudum that it’s essentially about a group of individuals who tend to err. They commit wrongdoings, which often lead them into increasingly complex situations. Sometimes, they continue to make things worse for themselves, but at other times, they manage to correct their course and do the right thing.

Tracking down the ideal Harlan proved challenging, but once he encountered McCallany, it felt as if I’d found a doppelganger for my father. Williamson went on to say, “I kept wondering, ‘Who would play Superman?’
In my exploration of Holt, I discovered his strong bond with his character. He’s quite enigmatic, presenting a mix of roughness, strength, and resilience on one hand, and vulnerability, emotion, and sincerity on the other. I admire these traits in him.
