Although Bruegel has only shown up in two episodes thus far, I find myself firmly believing that he is one of the greatest villains in the history of The Walking Dead. In his debut episode, Kim Coates’ portrayal of Bruegel was highly engaging, thanks to his compelling gestures and stylish wardrobe. Despite remaining silent in the first episode, it was impossible not to be instantly drawn into his character. In the second season premiere of Dead City, we didn’t learn much about him other than he heads one of Manhattan’s most influential gangs and operates a zombie fighting ring where people wager valuable items on who they think will emerge victorious.
In episode 4, Bruegel played a more significant role than expected, and his character exceeded my anticipations. He’s undeniably a crook, ruthless enough to climb the ladder at anyone’s expense – a classic antagonist. Yet, I find myself drawn to him despite his corrupt nature. Coates delivers an outstanding performance, and it’s fascinating to watch such a morally questionable character play the gracious host in a series like The Walking Dead. There’s a shared passion for art between Bruegel and Dama, but their hunger for power is what truly binds them.
Beneath Bruegel’s amiable exterior lies an individual who is willing to betray others for personal gain, and this is evident in his “fight club.” The supposed champion he orchestrates to fight is actually a human being, used to secure lavish rewards such as the museum that serves as a hideout for Bruegel’s gang. Despite his despicable actions, Bruegel’s captivating charm and flamboyant persona make him difficult not to admire. The cold-blooded murder of his former bodyguard once he was deemed unnecessary reveals a ruthless side hidden beneath Bruegel’s more jovial public image, solidifying his status as a formidable antagonist.
The Walking Dead’s Main Show Never Had A Villain Like Bruegel
Out Of All The Walking Dead’s Memorable Villains, No One Feels Quite As Flamboyant As Bruegel
Bruegel, even though he debuted as “Feisty Friendly,” seems significant given his leadership of a large faction and the respect accorded to him, yet he yields less authority than the Croat and the Dama, suggesting he may not ascend to become the primary antagonist in “Dead City.” However, he appears capable enough to cause trouble in future events.
Bruegel might come across as cocky and self-assured, but beneath this facade lies a deep sense of insecurity that became apparent when he reacted dramatically after a museum artifact was burned. Furthermore, the revelation of his bodyguard secret hints at a significant vulnerability, sharing some similarities with the Governor’s secret about his zombie daughter. However, unlike other villains we have encountered, Bruegel showed no mercy in putting his reputation above the life of his loyal servant when it was at stake, making him unique.
Despite the fact that we haven’t fully explored Bruegel’s character, it’s evident that he is intelligent, cunning, and a master opportunist, with his watch serving as a formidable weapon setting him apart. Consequently, I am intrigued to observe how he navigates Dead City’s New Babylon Federation during the impending conflict, and how his dynamic with Negan unfolds. While it is premature to declare Bruegel as The Walking Dead’s finest villain given his secondary status, his captivating personality has drawn me in, and I eagerly anticipate his next appearance.
Bruegel Needs To Remain Part Of The Walking Dead Franchise (But I Doubt He Will)
He Would Be A Great Adversary Going Forward
Considering the significant mark Bruegel has made in “Dead City” so far, I’m eagerly hoping he’ll stay with “The Walking Dead” for a prolonged period. If Bruegel were to become a recurring character, it would guarantee ongoing amusement, and that’s especially true if he interacts more with original characters. In “Dead City,” Coates portrayed Bruegel and Negan as friends-turned-enemies, hinting at potential entertaining exchanges between them despite their differing allegiances. However, this dynamic has only heightened my curiosity to see him engage with other “Walking Dead” veterans.
1. Observing him paired with someone as stoic as Daryl would create a humorous contrast, and I can’t help but wonder what dialogues between Princess and Bruegel might sound like. Given Jadis transitioned to become an occasional ally of Rick despite her consistent role as a villain throughout the series, there’s no reason Bruegel can’t follow suit. However, given that he’s now in New York, his appearances would likely be rare. Also, Kim Coates is quite a sought-after actor, making it almost miraculous if Bruegel survives Dead City season 2.
