As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that “The Union” is a refreshing addition to the romcom-spy-thriller genre. The decision not to kiss the leads after 109 minutes might seem daring, but it leaves room for anticipation and potential sequels – a strategy that, in my book, is as smart as a well-crafted undercover agent.
The latest romantic-spy flick from Netflix, titled “The Union,” revolves around the rekindled love between two former high school sweethearts. One is Mike, a working-class construction guy played by Mark Wahlberg, while the other is Roxanne, a secret agent portrayed by Halle Berry.
As a dedicated cinephile, I found myself immersed in the 109-minute journey of this film, yet the lead characters never shared a kiss – a choice that, as I understand it, was hotly debated behind the scenes by director Julian Farino. This decision, it seems, was intended to keep us, the fans, yearning for more.
“Farino mentioned during the L.A. premiere on Monday that the relationship might be developed to a specific point, and from there, he feels there should be plenty of room for expansion. Netflix initially suggested this could potentially be a trilogy, so if viewers are left wanting more, like perhaps a kiss, then in his view, we’ve done well.”
Farino attended the premiere of “The Union” at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater alongside Berry, Wahlberg, and other cast members. They talked about how they transformed the Netflix action-adventure into a reality. The story revolves around a clandestine division called “The Union,” whose mission is to turn ordinary blue-collar workers into lethal spies. Following an operation abroad that was exposed, Roxanne heads back to her home state of New Jersey to enlist Mike, her old high school sweetheart, who due to his low profile and construction skills, fits perfectly in the team.
Berry and Wahlberg agreed with Farino’s reasoning for not including a kiss in their storyline. “If they kiss, it will end things,” Berry clarified. “We hope we can do a sequel where the chase remains unresolved.” Berry added, “You want to follow their journey – to witness these two former high school sweethearts reuniting.”
Speaking of the possibilities ahead, I’d venture to say that if we move forward with another project, there might be much more than a simple peck on the cheek. However, it’s all speculation for now; we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and see how things unfold.
Apart from its romantic elements, “The Union” delivers a good dose of tangible action. The movie’s filming took place in various locations such as New Jersey, New York, London, and Slovenia, which is quite unusual for an industry that’s becoming more economical with its productions. Berry was delighted to be involved in a project that opted for on-location shooting instead of confining itself to sound stages.
“Instead of merely imagining and acting like we’re in different locations such as Italy, London, or Croatia on a stage, we actually traveled to these places. I believe this real-life experience enhances the film’s authenticity. It also assists us actors in finding the right mindset for our roles. And during our free time, we get to enjoy exploring these beautiful destinations.”
