As a dedicated fan of K-dramas who’s seen it all, from chicken nugget people to shadowy creature-eyed gougers, I can confidently say that The Trunk is shaping up to be another captivating addition to Netflix’s lineup. With its intriguing premise of a designed marriage, this drama promises to explore the complexities of love and relationships in a way only K-dramas can.

This year, Netflix’s original Korean dramas have been highly successful, and it seems that “The Trunk” is set to continue this trend. Indeed, the rhyme was deliberate.

In terms of unusual and unique storylines, a Korean drama (K-drama) is likely to explore it. This year alone, we’ve witnessed characters transforming into chicken nuggets, having their eyes plucked out by mysterious shadowy beings, and participating in game shows more intense than Squid Game but tamer than Sesame Street.

In a more straightforward manner, the upcoming series on Netflix, titled “The Trunk,” explores an intriguing concept: what if your marriage was planned out, instead of based on romantic love?

As it turns out, a multitude of misfortunes seem to be lining up for our beloved protagonists. Let me fill you in on the details of “The Trunk,” and keep an eye out for its release on Netflix!

The Trunk release date

The series titled “The Trunk” is scheduled for release on November 29, 2024. Initially, there will be a total of eight episodes, but it’s yet undecided whether they will be all released simultaneously.

Based on the release patterns of other contemporary K-Dramas, it seems likely that “The Trunk” will air on a weekly schedule. This theory is further supported by the current listing on IMDb which only includes the premiere episode.

Yet, given that we’re dealing with Netflix here, which typically drops all episodes at once, there’s a possibility that they might do the same for Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 as well. After all, it was only recently (a few months back) that they released season 2, so anything could be on the table.

Each episode is estimated to last approximately an hour, with the specific episode titles still under wraps.

Who’s in it?

Leading the cast is Gong Yoo, who plays Jung-won, and Seo Hyun-jin, who stars opposite as In-ji.

It’s quite possible that you’ve encountered both of these performers previously. Gong Yoo, the individual who extends the game invitation to Gi-hun in Squid Game, may reappear in potential future seasons of the series.

Additionally, he has appeared in the series “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God”. Regarding Seo Hyun-jin, K-drama enthusiasts may recognize her from “Why Her” and “Beauty Inside”.

Instead of saying “Jung-won is an anxious and lonely man,” it could be rephrased as “Jung-won appears to be a man who feels anxious and lonely.” As for Seo Hyun-jin, instead of “Seo Hyun-jin is thought to be disillusioned,” one possible paraphrase would be “Seo Hyun-jin seems to have lost faith or hope in something.

In addition, we have Jung Yun-ha portraying the character of Seo-yeon, who was previously married to Jung-won. It appears she has some connection with the NM Company, although this will become clearer as the story unfolds, and it’s not a positive association.

Kim Dong-won and Uhm Ji-won also star in the series in as-of-yet-undisclosed roles.

The Trunk plot

According to the 2015 novel titled “The Trunk” penned by Kim Ryeo-ryeong, the story revolves around Jung-won, a character who gets involved in a one-year matrimonial agreement with In-ji.

Here, we introduce Seo-yeon, who steps into the agreement facilitated by NM Company. She presents it to him, consequently making it known to the affluent In-ji as well.

Initially, Jung-won harbors feelings for Seo-yeon at the outset of their contract, but over time, his affection evolves genuinely towards his new spouse. However, events take a dramatic turn when a secretive chest is retrieved from a lake. This discovery unveils clandestine information about NM Company, causing Jung-won to question his long-held beliefs as the authorities delve deeper into the matter.

Since it’s a complete series, it follows logically that all parts of the story, including the mystery within the trunk, will be revealed for us to discover.

Is there a trailer?

Netflix released the official trailer on November 12, which you can catch up with here:

The information provided is limited to what’s been revealed in the formal summary, and fans are thoroughly enjoying unraveling the enigma themselves.

“A trailer should be crafted in such a way that it piques your curiosity, but doesn’t reveal too much about the story so that you don’t know exactly how the film will unfold – unlike most trailers today that seem to tell the entire movie in advance.

Another individual chimed in, “To be honest, it doesn’t matter to me what’s inside the trunk. As far as I’m concerned, you could even put me in there if there’s WiFi so I can watch this show. All that truly matters is that Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin will be on screen together.

How to watch

You won’t find “The Trunk” streaming on regular Korean drama platforms; instead, it will be exclusively viewable on Netflix.

If you haven’t signed up for the streaming service yet, plans start at $6.99 per month, with ads. Sadly, there’s no free trial option.

As I eagerly await the next episode of my favorite K-dramas, I can’t help but share some highly anticipated series that are set to grace our screens this year. Don’t forget to tune in and discover the amazing TV shows that will be streamed throughout this month as well!
