The “Tricky” BioShock Movie Is Not Dead, Brings On A New Writer

The development of the Netflix Bioshock film, as reported by director Francis Lawrence, is ongoing. In an interview, he mentioned that it’s a challenging project requiring careful adaptation and patience to perfect.

Lawrence reportedly shared with IGN that he received a fresh version of the BioShock movie script not long ago, and he had a discussion with writer Justin Rhodes on May 7th. It’s worth mentioning that Rhodes has worked on Terminator: Dark Fate and the television series Secret Level. Earlier drafts were penned by Michael Green, who is known for his work on Blade Runner 2049.

Lawrence mentioned that the process of adapting BioShock into a movie is quite complex and requires careful attention to many details.

Lawrence touched on the shift in leadership at Netflix, where Dan Lin replaced Scott Stuber and was given the task to elevate production quality. In 2024, producer Roy Lee mentioned that the BioShock movie was reimagined as a more intimate project due to the changes in Netflix’s leadership structure.

Even amidst the chaos, Lawrence expressed that he genuinely believes they are doing well with the BioShark film project.

Previously, Lawrence has been at the helm of several Hunger Games films, most recently The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. With a host of future projects such as Constantine 2 and I Am Legend 2 in the pipeline, it remains unclear if or when he will bring BioShock to the big screen.

In its initial stages, the BioShock film is underway, and actor Jack Quaid (known from The Boys) has expressed enthusiasm about potentially being part of it, as the series boasts an incredibly deep backstory.

Concerning the BioShock video game franchise, it’s being developed by 2K’s Cloud Chamber Studios. At this stage, information about the game is limited, but it’s important to note that Ken Levine, the original series creator, isn’t part of the project.
