In a few days, we’re expecting the announcement of the cast for Season 4 of The Traitors. To put it mildly, I’m absolutely thrilled! This fresh reality series has climbed high on my list of favorites over the past few years, and I’m eagerly anticipating watching how the game continues to develop.
If you found it somewhat indirectly flattering, I must agree – it was indeed a backhanded compliment. The TV show “The Traitors” certainly boasts many wonderful aspects, such as its knack for gathering entertaining characters from multiple reality show spheres. However, the fundamental structure and gameplay of the series could benefit from some adjustments. At present, the formula seems slightly off-balance, and there’s no dearth of suggestions for rule modifications and innovative additions from critics like myself, which might help iron out the kinks.
Although I’ll delve only slightly into this topic, it is likely that they will keep experimenting until the rules become more streamlined. However, my primary concern is not on the complexities of these rules, but rather a simpler solution. Specifically, I propose that the contestants in The Traitors adopt a strategy similar to Survivor by being truthful and candid about the actual game they are playing during their confessional sessions.
Let’s rewind for a moment to the inception of ‘Survivor’. Originally conceived as a social experiment, the premise was that individuals would be eliminated if they were poor survivors or lacked effort. While these aspects still hold some weight, the primary factor driving decisions is who players want to collaborate with, aiming to reach the game’s end together. Richard Hatch didn’t secure victory due to his superior survival skills, although he was skilled in fishing; instead, he outsmarted the others.
The reality TV show, “Survivor,” has largely thrived on its unpredictability. Instead of forcing contestants to adhere strictly to the initial rules, producers have allowed them to act according to their instincts and then encouraged them to discuss these actions during interviews. This approach has led to frank confessions about eliminating competitors for questionable reasons, manipulating challenges, or intentionally keeping undesirable players in the game.
In the second season of “The Traitors”, there’s a need for the game to emphasize its strategic aspect more. As seen in the gameplay, Survivor veteran Sandra openly discussed with other players that “The Traitors” is essentially a numbers game and they should focus on alliances. She also expressed her annoyance when a traitor gets voted out as it requires finding a new one to continue manipulations. In her interview with Entertainment Weekly upon leaving the game, she mentioned that her strategy was to purposefully get near traitors and maintain their presence to prevent them from eliminating her.
The show gave us bits and pieces of her talking about strategy and gameplay, but it didn’t show a lot of the conversation and never fully leaned in and let her just say that during a confessional. We never got her speaking to the camera and saying here’s what I’m trying to do and why.
In her personal exit interviews following Season 3, beloved Big Brother participant Britney expressed surprise at how disorganized and tumultuous Danielle appeared within the castle. Many fans believe Britney suspected Danielle of being a traitor early on in the series, but didn’t voice this suspicion during any confessional moments, possibly because the show discourages contestants from discussing the intentional keeping of traitors among them.
The Show “Traitors” appears to be striving for a particular image. It gives the impression that contestants are putting forth great effort during challenges, when it’s obvious they’re not. It seeks to portray the wise decision in any given situation as expelling a traitor at the roundtable. It attempts to depict everyone playing the game according to the fundamental rules of the show, but this is evidently not the case.
In a more engaging presentation, “The Traitors” could capitalize on the cunning strategies of competitors such as Sandra, rather than attempting to minimize them. This shift would not only enhance the overall quality of the show but also provide opportunities for the producers to innovate and develop the game in more captivating directions.
