I’m honestly shocked by what’s happening with the Toronto Film Critics Association right now. It seems they’re facing a major crisis after editing out pro-Palestinian statements from an acceptance speech during their awards show. The trouble started when Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, a fantastic Indigenous actress, won for her role in Sweet Angel Baby. She sent in a video message, but the TFCA apparently decided to remove her expression of support for Palestine before airing it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she originally said she stood with the people of Palestine and thanked those in the industry who’ve spoken out, but that portion was completely cut. It’s a really troubling situation and raises serious questions about censorship and artistic freedom.
Following the decision to edit her acceptance speech, Tailfeathers returned her award on Wednesday. In an email to the TFCA, she explained that she felt her words were unfairly silenced under the guise of protecting her, which she found deeply concerning. She believes the awards should celebrate free expression, and censorship goes against that principle. Tailfeathers expressed her disgust and shame at the act of censorship, stating that remaining neutral is itself a political choice and a form of harm. Because the award was now connected to this censorship, she could no longer accept it in good conscience.
The TFCA president, Johanna Schneller, explained that Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ acceptance speech, like those of other winners, was cut short to keep the awards show on schedule. Schneller has announced she will resign as president due to this decision.
Following Schneller’s departure, 16 of the 46 members of the TFCA have resigned – that’s over a third of the organization. Radheyan Simonpillai, a former member, explained to THR that timing has never been a concern with past events, including speeches and videos at the ceremony in question. He added that if timing was an issue, it should have been communicated to the artist, as their speech appeared to be the only one that was edited. Several other members are now considering whether to leave as well.
