The movie is coming out tomorrow and is expected to be the biggest hit of the year so far. It could even have a better opening weekend than the previous film in the series.
Experts predict The Super Mario Bros. Movie will have a very successful opening weekend over Easter, potentially earning around $350 million worldwide.
The film earned half of its total revenue – around $150 million – from 4,000 North American theaters in only five days. This is a higher opening weekend total than the year’s previous top film, Pegasus 3, which made about $152 million during its opening weekend in China. It’s also on track to potentially surpass a film that earned $300 million in just two weeks.
What Is the Super Mario Galaxy Movie All About?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie brings back the voice cast we know and love – Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Jack Black as Bowser – for a brand new adventure. This time, the story takes them on a journey beyond the Mushroom Kingdom, as they try to stop the surprisingly strong Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, before it’s too late.
The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie will introduce several popular Nintendo characters not seen in the first film. In addition to Yoshi’s debut, the movie will feature Princess Rosalina, voiced by a yet-to-be-announced actor, and she’ll play a significant part in the film’s story, which involves traveling between stars.
We’ll be seeing familiar faces return, along with some surprising characters that fans might not expect. The way the story is unfolding will make these characters particularly interesting.
Why The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Isn‘t Just About Mario
Fans recently discovered a surprise character will appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Star Fox! Glen Powell, known for his roles as Chad Powers and in The Running Man, shared the exciting news on social media with a funny video, revealing he’ll be voicing the iconic character.
Although Fox McCloud’s appearance likely won’t drastically change the plot of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it does open the door for many other Nintendo characters to potentially appear in future films. This is particularly true for characters well-known from the Smash Bros. series, even if they don’t have a connection to Mario’s story.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lands in theaters on Apr. 1.
