Given this, a music video for the song felt like a promising opportunity, especially since Swift had expressed a desire to create more videos during her break from touring. Some hoped to see Swift fully embody the iconic actress, complete with a dark wig and dramatic makeup, perhaps even recreating looks from films like Cleopatra.
However, the video, released on March 31st on Apple Music and Spotify, turned out to be more of a tribute than a narrative. It’s essentially a collection of footage featuring Elizabeth Taylor – clips from her movies, interviews, and public appearances – set to the song. While it’s a nice gesture that Swift acknowledges Taylor’s unmatched talent, the video feels like a learning exercise in video editing rather than a fully realized artistic vision. Taylor Nation explained the video was intended as a nod to Women’s History Month. Perhaps fans can still hope for a more elaborate costume and performance in future videos, but for now, it might be time to revisit films like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
