The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Gets Exciting Update About Its Characters And World

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the vibrant worlds of Nintendo, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie! Having grown up with the original games and being part of the generation that witnessed the Mushroom Kingdom come to life on the big screen, this news is music to my ears.

In 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was one of the year’s blockbusters, and a follow-up film is planned for release in 2026. Keegan-Michael Key, who lends his voice to Toad, recently shared that the sequel will expand its horizons and introduce even more characters from the Mushroom Kingdom in interviews.

Key shared with Men’s Journal that the second film expands its setting into a more expansive universe, which he finds particularly captivating in terms of lore. He hinted at discovering some truly remarkable hidden references, and so far, the experience has been thrilling.

He added: “I feel like what they’ve done creatively is they’ve really widened out the universe that these characters live in and we’re going to meet some new folks.”

It’s unclear who these fresh personalities are, but Key hinted that some of them might be less commonly known characters from the Mario universe, labeled as “deep cuts.” Given the current direction of the story, these lesser-known characters could make for an interesting addition, according to Key.

In 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie garnered a staggering $1.36 billion at the cinema, trailing slightly behind Barbie’s record-breaking $1.44 billion.

Chris Meledandri from Illumination is returning to produce the sequel, teaming up with Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario. The same directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who made the 2023 movie, will also be back for the next installment. As before, Universal Pictures is partnering financially with Nintendo and handling the distribution of the film.

Alongside the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, Nintendo is also producing a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, with director Wes Ball (known for Planet of the Apes and Maze Runner) at the helm.
