The Studio Gets Kool-Aid Fact Wrong

In the first episode of this Hollywood-set comedy series, Seth Rogen portrays the studio boss. However, there’s an unfortunate error regarding the Jonestown massacre that the show unfortunately perpetuates.

The new Apple TV+ comedy series, titled “The Studio,” was conceived by veteran partners Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, alongside creators Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, and Frida Perez.

In the opening scene, Rogen takes on the central role as Matt Remick, a character who finally secures his long-cherished position of managing Continental Studios, granting him the authority to approve films for production.

However, in Episode 1, he’s additionally faced with demands from the new CEO of Continental, Griffin Mill (Bryan Cranston), to produce a film about the Kool-Aid Man. This is when Remick encounters difficulties, and it’s also where the show incorrectly reveals a significant aspect about the Jonestown tragedy.

They didn’t drink the Kool-Aid at Jonestown

Initially, Remick has a conversation with director Nicholas Stoller regarding a potential animated Kool-Aid movie. Later on, he engages in a discussion with Martin Scorsese, who expresses interest in creating a film about the Jonestown tragedy. At this juncture, Remick recognizes a chance.

In this scenario, Remick persuades Scorsese to title his film ‘Kool-Aid’, which leads to the production of a cinema piece, albeit an art-house film, that showcases the very product that his superior insists upon. The tragic historical context here is that the mass tragedy presided over by Jim Jones in 1978 involved many deaths due to drinking Kool-Aid contaminated with cyanide.

As a devoted history enthusiast, I find it crucial to clarify a misconception that’s been floating around for years – though there may have been Kool-Aid in Jonestown, the compelling evidence suggests that the tragic victims perished from drinking Flavor Aid contaminated with poison. At the time, Flavor Aid was a similar, more affordable alternative, but it definitely wasn’t Kool-Aid.

Although the incident unfortunately increased the usage of the phrase “don’t drink the Kool-Aid,” which caused discomfort for their marketing team, it has since been clarified, due to images showing containers filled with Flavor Aid from Jonestown, that Kool-Aid was not the lethal beverage consumed.

It might be expected that Matt Remick, along with Scorsese who is known for his meticulousness and having authored a Jonestown script, would be aware of this fact.

However, The Studio elects to focus on the mythical aspect of the character instead of adhering strictly to the facts. Frankly, it’s hard not to appreciate this creative decision, as the Kool-Aid concept serves as an excellent joke and sets the stage for a strong premiere episode.

As an enthusiastic viewer, I’m thrilled to share that the initial chapters of “The Studio” are now available for streaming on Apple TV+.
