Seth Rogen’s Apple TV+ comedy “The Studio” is causing a stir in the entertainment world with its sharp satire that critiques the process of filmmaking within Hollywood.
In a discussion held at the Museum of Modern Art, Rogen mentioned that he has been contacted by numerous heads of significant film studios day after day. He described it as a situation where he’s being told things like, “This is fantastic, but quite distressing to view.” (Jenelle Riley from EbMaster’s moderated the event.)
Drawing from genuinely unsettling anecdotes that Rogen and his collaborators have encountered, “The Studio” delves into the story of Matt Remick (portrayed by Rogen), a freshly appointed head at Continental Studios. Caught in a struggle between nurturing artistic excellence and the studio’s pressing need to rake in profits through intellectual properties, Matt finds himself navigating this complex landscape.
Rogen expressed his genuine affection for the industry, saying, ‘It’s a world we adore.’ He wrote from the perspective of individuals who acknowledge that this industry has made their dreams come true in numerous aspects, yet it’s also incredibly vexing and infuriating. Time and again, you witness people making perplexing and contradictory decisions, choices that seem to go against their own passion for cinema.
In the movie “Bodies Bodies Bodies”, actress Chase Sui Wonders portrays Quinn Hackett, a swiftly-advancing assistant who must grasp the intricacies of her new role as Creative Executive following her promotion.
During my portrayal of Quinn, where I’d be yelling and screaming at Seth and Ike’s characters, many women on set would approach me and remark, ‘That’s just how I wish I could speak to my boss.’ To which I’d reply, ‘Well, your boss is actually Seth.’
Ike Barinholtz, the actor portraying Matt’s trusted associate Sal Saperstein, shared his thoughts on the allure of engaging in activities within our world, expressing it as: “There’s a magnetic quality to participating in life.
Barinholtz expressed his fondness for ‘Larry Sanders’ and ‘The Player.’ He added that each discussion he had with Seth became increasingly wild.
As a passionate cinephile, I must say that the series boasts numerous extended shots, particularly evident in Episode 2, which was remarkably captured in a single uninterrupted take. In describing this approach, Rogen explained the delicate act of blending the structured rigidity of long takes with the raw spontaneity of improvisation. He advised his crew, “If an idea strikes you, speak up, but beware – even if it’s off-the-wall, it might disrupt the entire take.
In a scene from the show “Agatha All Along,” actress Kathryn Hahn, portraying character Maya Mason, spontaneously said, “Steve Buscemi is the epitome of disaster.
As soon as we figured out the camera’s position,” Hahn explained, “you were aware of the amount of time remaining. This allowed you an opportunity to attempt to sneak something into the shot.
Rogen added that Bryan Cranston, who portrays Griffin Mill (character named after Tim Robbins’ film executive in “The Player”), suggested the phrase “plastic tits of a doll without a pussy” during a conversation about Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” among executives.
Croston stated that, although he’s not pleased by this, it shows the freedom given to artists when they can express themselves openly. As for him, at a particular stage in his career, he no longer wishes to collaborate with difficult individuals, or ‘assholes’, as he puts it. He simply doesn’t have the time for such people.
