The Stars of Queer Discuss Sex Scene ADR

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinematic storytelling over the decades, I find myself particularly intrigued by the behind-the-scenes tales that often go unnoticed by the general audience. The recent interview with Omar Apollo and Drew Starkey from ‘Queer‘ has certainly piqued my interest in a unique aspect of filmmaking – post-production sound effects, specifically grunts and gasps.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve been noticing quite a few discussions lately about the intricacies of filming intimate scenes. Topics range from intimacy coordinators, prosthetics, and even prop squirt, like in ‘Babygirl’. However, during a recent interview with Omar Apollo and Drew Starkey from ‘Queer’, they shed light on an interesting aspect – post-production care for sex scenes, often referred to as automated dialogue replacement (ADR). Now, in ‘Queer’, it wasn’t so much dialogue but grunts and gasps that needed replacing. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the movie features Daniel Craig as a disillusioned expat in Mexico, who learns that it’s not about the destination, but the companions he encounters on his journey. Both Apollo and Starkey had scenes requiring more audio enhancement. “It was hilarious. Luca asked if we could do noises,” said Apollo. “It always involves effort, breaths, and groans. Being in a booth alone doing that makes you feel like you’re in an insane asylum,” echoed Starkey.

Both Apollo and Starkey were full of admiration for their fellow actor Craig, and even went beyond praise in their compliments. As Starkey put it, “He’s incredibly talented across all areas of his profession, and consistently gave his best each day.” And, as a quirky individual, Craig earned the nickname of “weirdo” from Starkey. Before filming an intimate scene together, Apollo shared that he and Craig enjoyed some pre-scene drinks consisting of gin and tonics. According to Apollo, “The atmosphere was great, and I had a memorable experience working with him.”
