In the 2016 “reveal” trailer for The Last of Us Part II video game, a song was prominently played which was sung by actress Ashley Johnson (as character Ellie), prior to her interacts with Joel. What gamers later discovered was that this scene involved not Joel himself but rather his ghost.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Johnson plays Ellie’s mother in Season 1 of The Last of Us. This fact adds an additional layer of significance when Bella Ramsey’s Ellie reaches out to Joel, holding his limp hand after he’s lost his life.
Variety queried co-creator Craig Mazin regarding the song, and he attributed its presence to The Last of Us’ creator Neil Druckmann, explaining that it was included in the game’s narrative world.
Mazin goes on to say: “At times, my role involves choosing what to take. Since Ashley played Ellie’s mother, there remains a lingering spectral presence throughout. Consequently, in the final scene, we see little Ellie struggling to breathe with her father, and the voice of the woman who was her mother echoes. And it’s truly moving.
Occasionally, different realms intersect; I can’t find another way to explain it. We don’t dabble much in meta-discussions, but when they overlap, it’s noticeable. This particular moment seems to be one of those instances where the realms can connect, since it’s a common experience we all share now.
Everyone who played the game and those who didn’t, we’ve all experienced it together. The song’s lyrics are lovely, Ashley’s voice is captivating, and I can’t imagine a more fitting conclusion.
