As a long-time Sims player and avid follower of the game’s development, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing the rumors of The Sims 5 being canceled. The prospect of a new console entry in the series has been an exciting one for me and many other fans, especially given the success of The Sims 4 and its numerous expansions.
The fate of The Sims is still up in the air, with reports suggesting that the anticipated follow-up to The Sims 4 has been scrapped. This information comes from a developer update, where it was revealed that a former Maxis employee, who had worked as a lead character artist at the studio for over three years and contributed to what they claim is the now canceled PlayStation 5 version of The Sims 5, shared this news.
A Twitter user named SimmerBerkay discovered some intriguing information. They came across a post from a previous Maxis employee on LinkedIn, who casually mentioned that they were working on a project using Unreal Engine 5. Interestingly enough, this is the same engine being used for EA and Maxis’ other Sims-related initiative, Project Rene.
There’s some uncertainty if The Sims 5 and Project Rene are different games. EA and Maxis have been silent about Project Rene since the last update in the previous year. A possible indication that they are distinct projects is that Project Rene is predicted to be compatible with both mobile and PC platforms, without any mention of console versions.
According to Game Director Grant Rodiek in a recent EA blog post, “Project Rene” caters to various forms of gameplay: mobile and PC versions. To cater to a broad audience, we’re working on incorporating simulation modes, fostering social connections, providing customization tools for furniture and interior design, and allowing users to create their unique clothing and characters. Additionally, we aim to introduce new social experiences.
In early 2024, Rodiek parted ways with EA and Maxis. His significant role in forthcoming Sims developments leaves the present situation of Project Rene uncertain.
