As stated by the creators of The Simpsons, the series is likely to be the “final television program to adopt AI technology” for several reasons that would not be beneficial for the longevity of the popular sitcom.
Discussions surrounding the application of AI in films and TV shows are growing more debated as time goes by. Whenever a production incorporates artificial intelligence, it stirs up headlines – such as Secret Invasion leveraging generative AI for its title sequence, The Brutalist employing an AI program for minor aspects of the actors’ performances, and Late Night with the Devil utilizing AI-generated backdrops.
In May, Google introduced Veo 3, an AI technology for generating images and videos capable of producing cinematic scenes. However, it’s worth noting that there’s usually a slight oddity: dialogues that don’t align with the actors’ facial expressions, glossy effects, and other peculiarities.
Regarding animation, there’s a thought that AI might accelerate the workflow, yet it’s unlikely you’ll find it in shows like The Simpsons.
The Simpsons writers say AI doesn’t have a sense of humor
During a conversation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Matt Groening (the mastermind behind The Simpsons) was inquired about the potential use of Artificial Intelligence within the ongoing TV show.
He found it fascinating, but personally believed that AI wouldn’t develop a sense of humor. As such, he felt human involvement was crucial. He expressed eagerness to witness the outcome.
David Silverman, a frequent director of the show and one who directed “The Simpsons Movie,” commented: “The traditional animation production process isn’t compatible with AI technology. It can’t be effectively used. Instead, it would only create confusion.
Lest we forget, an AI-generated ‘live-action’ version of The Simpsons went viral last year:
Matt Selman, a veteran writer for the show, stated that The Simpsons won’t be one of the first shows to adopt AI technology, but rather the last, and he mentioned that the team frequently discusses the various errors AI systems have made regarding the series in their group chat.
The AI might falsely claim that a non-existent episode occurred, it could invent titles, list fictitious guest stars, and state that certain individuals portrayed characters they did not actually play,” he explained.
Although I believe it could become intelligent eventually, at this point it’s quite unintelligent. Spreading false information artificially is ludicrous, and it seems to be filling people’s minds with a lot of nonsense.
Groening also joked: “Well, AI stands for artificial idiocy.”
