As a seasoned connoisseur of animated sitcoms who has witnessed the evolution of television from black-and-white tubes to high-definition screens, I must say that the latest announcement about “The Simpsons” is music to my ears. The fact that this iconic series is not only continuing but also expanding its reach on Disney+ is a testament to its enduring appeal and timeless humor.
Starting this fall, Fox will air Season 36 of “The Simpsons.” But, if you want to watch some new episodes of this long-running animated series, you’ll also find them on Disney+. The show’s executive producers made this announcement at the D23 convention in Anaheim over the weekend.
The upcoming episodes feature a two-part Christmas special titled “O Come All Ye Faithful,” set to air on December 17. This is a tribute to the series’ 35th anniversary, as it coincides with the first-ever “Simpsons” holiday episode, “Simpsons Roasting Over An Open Fire,” which premiered in 1989.
In the upcoming months, two more episodes titled “The Past and the Furious” and “Yellow Planet” are set to air, as announced by Disney+. Additionally, a spooky Halloween-themed Simpsons short will make its debut on Disney+ in October.
Disney+ has aired various exclusive “The Simpsons” mini-episodes on their platform, such as “The Force Awakens from Its Nap,” “The Good, the Bart, and the Loki,” and “Plusaversary” in 2021. This was followed by “When Billie Met Lisa,” “Welcome to the Club,” and “The Simpsons Meet the Bocellis in ‘Feliz Navidad'” in 2022, “Rogue Not Quite One” in 2023, and “May the 12th Be with You” in 2024.
For the first time ever, “The Simpsons” has created an exclusive episode specifically for Disney+, raising some intriguing questions about the future of the series on Fox. Similarly, another animated show from 20th TV, “Family Guy,” which airs on Fox, is also producing original episodes for Hulu alongside its broadcast run.
At the D23 event, during a gathering focused on “The Simpsons,” creators Matt Groening, Matt Selman, Al Jean, Mike Price, Brian Kelley, David Silverman, and voice actress Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson’s voice) shared some exciting news live on stage.
The panelists additionally revealed that the 18 episodes from Season 35, which were broadcasted on Fox during the previous season, are set to debut on Disney+ starting October 2nd.
Recently at San Diego Comic-Con, “The Simpsons” unveiled some details about Season 36, such as their collaboration with Stoopid Buddy (“Robot Chicken”) to tackle “Venom” during this year’s “Treehouse of Horror” special. Apart from the annual “Treehouse of Horror,” the season will also feature a “second scary trilogy” called “Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes.” According to Matt Groening, these stories will have a dark and humorous tone, fitting with the Halloween spirit.
Here’s a poster for the premiere of Season 35 on Disney+:
