The fragmented media landscape has certain outcomes, as demonstrated in the final episode of Season 36 of “The Simpsons.” In this episode titled “Estranger Things,” Marge appears to die symbolically, using the fast-forward format popularized by previous episodes such as “Lisa’s Wedding.”
In the storyline, Marge buys Maggie an Itchy & Scratchy onesie, causing Bart and Lisa to rebel against the show that had previously united them. Marge advises her children, “Your parents won’t be around forever; when you grow up, you’ll need to support each other.” Unfortunately, the kids ignore this advice and drift apart in a montage set to a parody of “When She Loved Me” from Toy Story 2, sung by Sarah McLachlan.
Marge’s early death is depicted in the montage, which includes a brief scene at her funeral. Homer cries over a tombstone engraved with “Beloved wife, mother, pork-chop seasoner.” McLachlan sings, “Marge passed before Homer, if you can believe it.”
The consequences of a fragmented media environment are shown in the final episode of “The Simpsons” Season 36. In this episode titled “Estranger Things,” Marge appears to die symbolically. This happens when Bart and Lisa turn against Itchy & Scratchy, causing them to grow apart from each other. Marge warns them that their parents won’t be around forever, but they ignore her advice. The story ends with a funeral scene for Marge, leaving Homer in tears.
The remainder of the show revolves around Bart, Lisa, and Homer reconnecting as a family after three and a half decades. At a certain juncture, Lisa discovers a video where Marge encourages Bart and Lisa to stay friends (and discloses that Maggie’s dream was always to be a farm equipment auctioneer). Later on, we see Marge one more time in the hereafter, sharing a kiss with the now-deceased Ringo Starr. “I’m simply overjoyed that we can wed different individuals in Heaven,” she remarks, wrapping up the episode.
It seems there’s some uncertainty about whether Marge is truly deceased, given the inconsistent flash-forwards in previous episodes of The Simpsons, such as “The Marge-ian Chronicles” from 2016, which depicts both Lisa and Marge alive on Mars 35 years into the future. Moreover, the show has been renewed up to season 40, suggesting that Marge’s iconic blue hair will continue gracing our screens for many years ahead.
