As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I must say that the JAFF Market 2024 has truly left me in awe. The vibrant energy and collaborative spirit were palpable, and the Indonesian film industry seems to be blossoming like a tropical flower in full bloom.

In the first-ever JAFF Market held in Yogyakarta (Jogja) in 2024, Ho Yuhang’s film titled “The Silent Village” (Aman/Damai) was crowned as the grand winner. It received both the Kongchak and BSM awards upon the conclusion of the market’s 2024 edition.

The event was held during the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF), from December 3rd to 5th. Among the 10 feature films selected for the project market, “The Silent Village,” a joint production between Malaysia and Indonesia written by Prima Rusdi, stood out, with Lorna Tee overseeing its production through Korea’s Barunson E&A.

In a turn of events, the filmmaker Reza Rahadian, previously an actor, garnered financial support for his production “Love Unwanted” (Pangku) from Gambar Gerak Film. This project was honored with the White Light Post-Production Award. Meanwhile, another esteemed BSM award was bestowed upon the documentary “Sampai Mati” (Until Death), directed by Australian filmmaker Ben Golotta and produced by Morgan Wright.

Miles Films unveiled their plans to start filming “Rangga & Cinta,” the third installment of the popular romance-drama series that originated with the 2002 release “What’s Up With Love?” and was followed by a 2016 sequel. This upcoming movie is supported by Barunson E&A from Korea and Imajinari from Indonesia. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony, where students from SMKN 2 Kasihan Bantul and SMM Yogyakarta performed songs from “What’s Up With Love?” in celebration.

Over a span of three days, the event attracted a diverse crowd of 6,723 participants from 18 different regions worldwide, creating a vibrant global atmosphere. A total of 151 exhibitor spaces were bustling with activity, leading to 1,767 meetings and the signing of 61 Memorandums of Understanding. Additionally, the event provided 1,054 badges and welcomed 164 international journalists.

The market’s project incubator, JAFF Future Project, reviewed 74 submissions before selecting its final slate of 10 projects – seven Indonesian, one Malaysian, and two Australian. The program facilitated 243 meetings across its run.

In terms of international diplomacy, the Indonesian Ministry of Culture has reinforced relationships with the Netherlands by establishing a collaborative agreement in the audiovisual production sector. This contract, signed by Barbera Wolfensberger, Director-General of Culture and Media at the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, and Indonesian Deputy Minister of Culture Giring Ganesha Djumaryo, provides a platform for filmmakers from both countries to secure financial support from their respective governments.

Magma Entertainment, a prominent Indonesian production house, seized the industry’s current growth, forging new alliances with Komet Productions of Malaysia and Caravan Studio, while also revealing their planned output from 2025 to 2028.

Ajish Dibyo, JAFF Market’s executive director, noted the clear excitement among Indonesian film industry professionals, as indicated by the numerous meetings held during the event. This high level of engagement suggests that the Indonesian film industry is receptive to partnerships, not just domestically, but also on an international scale,” (paraphrased).

The market is scheduled to return in 2025.
