Erica Messer, the showrunner for Criminal Minds: Evolution, recently shared news about the Sicarius Network.
Season 19 of Criminal Minds marks a shift for the show’s Evolution era. The Sicarius Network is no longer the main threat. Instead, the story focuses on a new case where former Sicarius leader Elias Voit is compelled to collaborate with the BAU to catch “The Fan,” a serial killer who is imitating Voit’s methods. While the Sicarius Network is seemingly dismantled, the series suggests that some former members are still out there, operating independently.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, actress Paula Newsome (Messer) discussed the future of the Sicarius Network in season 19 of Criminal Minds: Evolution. She explained that while some former members are still active, the show will shift away from focusing on the network as a large organization after its official breakup at the end of season 18. Instead, the new season will center around the emergence of a killer who is imitating their methods.
Check out what Messer had to say below:
I’m almost out of time, but I wanted to ask about the Sicarius network. It’s mentioned a few times this season, even though it was supposedly dismantled last season. When dealing with a network of serial killers, you’d expect some members to still be at large. Is it possible there are still loose ends with the Sicarius network, or is it completely finished?
At the end of season eighteen, when The Disciple was caught, Voit put his network into action, revealing the locations of many remaining players. We decided to move past revisiting the Sicarius storyline. Instead, we wanted to explore a new dynamic: because of Voit’s notoriety – the podcasts and books about him – he now has a fan. This brings us back to him, but in a different way. It felt like a natural progression for the team, who usually only deal with someone once for a case and then never see them again. The idea of a copycat or obsessed fan felt like a fresh approach to bring him back into the story.
The latest season of Criminal Minds: Evolution saw the takedown of the Sicarius Network with the capture of its leader, Tessa Merrick, known as “The Disciple.” While her arrest exposed the entire network, it also suggested that many of its members are still active, even without the formal structure of the group. This means these serial killers could remain a danger in the future.
The investigation is now concentrating on a serial killer who is imitating Voit’s crimes, rather than the larger network Voit led. To catch this copycat, the Criminal Minds team will still need Voit’s help. Voit and his network, Sicarius, have gained significant public attention, becoming a major true-crime phenomenon within the show. This means solving the copycat killings is now a priority for both the team and the public.
Similar to past seasons, season 19 of Criminal Minds: Evolution will have 10 episodes that all contribute to a single, ongoing story. The show has also been renewed for a 20th season, confirmed in March 2026, meaning this season’s copycat killer is part of a larger story arc that will continue for some time. According to showrunner Erica Messer, the series is shifting away from the wider criminal network seen previously, but will still maintain a connected storyline, just like fans have come to expect.
The nineteenth season of Criminal Minds: Evolution kicks off on May 28, 2026, with two episodes. While the main threat from the Sicarius Network appears to be over, the lasting effects of their actions will continue to impact the team. This season will focus on how the team deals with those consequences, and Voit will play a surprisingly important role in their efforts.
