Disney’s Global Sensation Franchise Is So Good, It Has At Least 8 More Movies Coming

Hollywood studios generally rely on franchises, but Walt Disney Studios is particularly dedicated to creating and expanding them. Throughout the 21st century, Disney has grown even more powerful by leveraging well-known stories and characters, and maximizing their potential once audiences respond positively.

Mickey Mouse and Winnie-the-Pooh continue to be central to Disney’s many brands. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, it launched a fresh chapter for Star Wars, bringing the beloved franchise back to life through new films, television series, video games, books, comics, and theme park experiences. Looking specifically at Disney’s film business, the company intends to expand its most popular franchises even further.

Disney is planning more sequels for several of its popular franchises. A new Frozen movie is coming next year, and two more Avatar films are also planned. A continuation of Pirates of the Caribbean has been in development for a while, and we can also expect new installments in the Incredibles, Lilo & Stitch, Alien, and Planet of the Apes series. Plus, another Toy Story movie is on the way soon.

Disney has confirmed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will keep expanding. The next installment, a collaboration between Sony and Disney called Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is scheduled for release in July, but this is just the beginning for what is already the most successful movie franchise of all time.

The MCU Has 8 Upcoming Movies Confirmed (& Likely Even More On The Way)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) started in 2008 with Iron Man, but it wasn’t until The Avengers in 2012 that Disney truly saw the massive success the franchise could achieve. Since then, Disney has supported Marvel Studios in continuing the series, and together they’ve created over 30 films in the last 14 years. With Disney confirming plans for eight more Marvel movies, the MCU shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

This timeline stretches from the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day this summer all the way to two currently unnamed Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films scheduled for 2029. Here’s a detailed look at the upcoming MCU movies and when they’re expected to be released:

  • July 31, 2026: Spider-Man: Brand New Day
  • December 18, 2026: Avengers: Doomsday
  • December 17, 2027: Avengers: Secret Wars
  • May 5, 2028: Untitled Marvel Studios Movie
  • July 28, 2028: Untitled Marvel Studios Movie
  • December 15, 2028: Untitled Marvel Studios Movie
  • May 4, 2029: Untitled Marvel Studios Movie
  • July 13, 2029: Untitled Marvel Studios Movie

Although the exact dates might change, the announced release schedule shows Disney and Marvel Studios intend to continue the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a long time. Avengers: Secret Wars will conclude the Multiverse Saga and essentially give the MCU a fresh start.

Starting in 2028, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will enter a new phase that’s expected to last well beyond the currently announced films. Marvel has already confirmed plans for several future movies, including a reboot of the X-Men, Black Panther 3, Shang-Chi 2, Blade, and Armor Wars. They are also likely developing completely new franchises and additional sequels in secret.

Will Disney Ever Let The MCU End?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Marvel Studios’ president is thrilled to finally begin incorporating the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the broader MCU. Because there are still so many characters and storylines from the comics to explore, Disney and Marvel have a plan to keep making these films for many years to come.

As a big MCU fan, I honestly can’t imagine it disappearing completely. Sure, things might change after Secret Wars, and maybe fan excitement will dip a bit. But with characters like Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, and so many others who are household names, I think the MCU has enough built-in recognition to keep going, even if interest isn’t always at its peak. The only real way I see it ending is if people just completely stop caring about the series.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) might only get a fresh start if it’s completely rebooted sometime in the future, likely after Kevin Feige moves on and Disney decides to reintroduce its most popular characters with a new approach. However, with so many films still planned, that scenario is quite far off.
