‘The Shrouds’ Trailer: David Cronenberg Reckons With Mortality in a Gravedigging Tech Conspiracy Thriller

David Cronenberg‘s latest thriller, “The Shrouds,” is gearing up for its North American premiere following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival last summer. The first official trailer for the movie has been unveiled by Janus Films. Starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Sandrine Holt and Guy Pearce (who was recently nominated for an Oscar), this film is at the heart of the storyline.

The director has created a thought-provoking plot for his 23rd movie, inspired by the death of his wife Carolyn Cronenberg from cancer in 2017 at the age of 66. The film revolves around a tech entrepreneur promoting an unusual software that enables users to witness the real-time decay of their deceased relatives. A series of vandalisms on the graves, including that of his late spouse, sets off a mysterious, possibly geopolitical conspiracy. This investigation draws in his wife’s sister (Kruger), her former husband (Pearce), and his international business dealings.

Cronenberg expressed during an interview with EbMaster before the film’s premiere at Cannes last year that he intended to explore the concept of paranoia. He suggested that theories about conspiracies can serve as a coping mechanism for grief. In certain situations, one might reach a point where they believe, ‘This person’s death has no purpose.’ And acknowledging that it’s senseless can be intolerable. However, finding a sense of purpose is something we are biologically inclined to do. Therefore, it seems comforting to imagine that there was a plot, and this individual was part of it.

The movie titled ‘The Shrouds’ premieres in both Los Angeles and New York on April 18th. After that, it will be shown across the country starting from April 25th. You can watch the trailer for it below.
