Indeed, it’s confirmed that Jacob and Colton crossed paths in the year 1814! While Susanna’s drawing hinted at this encounter, The Way Home Season 3 Episode 8 suggests there’s much more to their story than initially thought.
As for the Landry clan, it seems the roster of potential time travelers is continuously expanding. Initially, Alice and Kat were identified, with Elliot joining them not long after. In the year 1974, we discovered Colton shared this unique trait as well, but the method behind his ability remains a mystery.
As an avid viewer, I can’t help but ponder if this latest plot twist might shed light on a past character we’ve almost forgotten. However, it seems we may have to wait a while longer before the show reveals any definitive answers.
Still, another question arises that The Way Home needs to address – why is Colton traveling through time? Fortunately, we’re beginning to uncover the response in Season 3 Episode 8, and it’s nothing short of astonishing. Be advised: major spoilers lie ahead!
Colton meets Jacob in 1814
Previously, Susanna’s drawing confirmed that Jacob had visited Colton. Now, we get to witness the scene unfold firsthand. A rain-drenched Colton shows up at the Landry house, looking bewildered, and is greeted by Elijah and Jacob. Since Susanna provided Elijah with a copy of the Almanac, he uses it to understand that it’s 1814, thus explaining his confusion about the current situation.
We too observed what transpired as Susanna was drawing, with Colton remarking, “The duration I’ve been here is the same as the time I’m away.” This phrase is something that his grandmother often said. Fern, it seems like you’re holding back more information than you’re revealing, don’t you think?
Colton shares with Jacob that they’ve constructed a structure meant to endure for many years ahead, urging him to cultivate as much rye and potatoes as possible during this season and the one following, keeping in mind that another year without summer might not be too distant.

The Way Home Season 3 Episode 5 is based on a shocking true story
Thomas and Kat kiss… again
Absolutely! Kat has returned to the year 1816, and Thomas confessed that he’d secretly harbored hope for this moment. She expresses her annoyance about the kiss, stating she has “many things she needs to sort out in her thoughts.” Upon her return, Elliot immediately senses something is amiss.
Afterward, Kat takes Elliot aside and discloses about her kiss with Thomas. Elliot retorts, suggesting that she’s trying to “balance things out.” Kat responds by expressing her disinterest in a conflict, stating instead, “Something is damaged between us, and I’m unsure of how we can mend it. We shouldn’t have to strive so much to keep this going.” Elliot then implies that they might already know the solution, leading to their separation.
Noah and Alice break up too
Each time Alice receives a message from Noah, her heart feels heavy. Given that the evidence seems to confirm Casey as her child with Max Goodwin, she finds it hard to justify staying with Noah any longer.
When he arrives at her home holding a bouquet of flowers, Alice politely dismisses him. Noah inquires about her mood, prompting Alice to express her doubts about their relationship: “I don’t think this is going to work… I don’t want to hurt you.” Noah responds with a hint of bitterness, keeping the flowers and departing, saying, “It’s too late for that.
Later on, Alice makes her way towards the van in search of Noah, expressing her determination to embrace whatever lies ahead without fear. However, what she encounters is Max, who informs her that Noah has departed the area temporarily to gather his thoughts.
Evelyn overhears Colton’s proposal to Del
In 1974, Colton was deeply saddened by Del’s departure. Evelyn was making efforts to console him, expressing to Alice that she believed this moment could mean Colton and her spending eternity together.
In this rephrased version, Colton composes a tune intended for Del. As Alice attempts to decipher hints from the verses, they both complete the song collectively. Later on, Jason feels compelled to produce a demo of the completed work, which is the recording we initially heard in Episode 1.
Colton has another tune ready, which he incorporates into the demo. This seems familiar to Alice, as it reminds her of grown-up Colton and Del’s life together before Del passed away. As Evelyn walks into the store, she listens in on Colton discussing his intention to propose to Del before she departed from Port Haven.
Later on, Alice discovers Evelyn floating facedown in the pond, implying that she’s fated to yield to a love that’s unattainable. With foreknowledge, Alice informs Evelyn that Colton’s heart belongs to Del, describing his poems as melancholic, effectively making Evelyn tearfully depart. That hurts.
The year without sun causes problems
In a heartbeat, I found myself hurrying back to 1816 and embracing Thomas once more. Though merely two days have passed in the present, here in the past it’s been three months, and the year without sunlight is beginning to cast its chilling spell. The villagers are growing restless against Cyrus, their discontent palpable.
With Del, Elliot, and Jacob all feeling miserable, Jacob suggests it’s his responsibility to rectify the situation, plunging into the pond to rescue Kat. She encounters Susanna first, uncovering that Susanna had accessed the hidden passageways within the house. Susanna implies that Kat was able to do this only because Cyrus allowed her, with Cyrus disclosing his knowledge about Susanna’s painting of Kat.
Cyrus alleges that Susanna has been assisting Jacob in his getaway, noticing a “feeling she fails to express” towards him instead of herself. Meanwhile, the townspeople burst through Cyrus’ barriers, announcing their withdrawal of the agreement. This implies that Elijah is now exposed, as Cyrus had vowed to safeguard Susanna’s chosen kin.
Cyrus turns the town against the Landrys
In an attempt to reassert authority, Cyrus accuses the Landrys to the townsfolk as the only family whose crops survived the summer. As a result, Kat is publicly labeled as a witch, with Thomas observing from a distance. Cyrus loudly proclaims that Elijah Landry has struck a pact with the devil for his land, then marches the townspeople to Elijah’s home.
First to arrive at Elijah’s place are Kat, Susanna, and Thomas. Jacob turns up simultaneously to take Kat away. However, Elijah refuses to depart, leading to the unfortunate event of stones being hurled through their window. In the days to follow, Kat shares what transpired with the town, which is met with disapproval, much like a poorly received bag of potatoes. The situation escalates into a violent melee aimed at burning down the Landry residence, but only ceases when Cyrus discovers Susanna is within.
As everyone else manages to get away from the fire, Jacob and Cyrus remain inside until the roof collapses. Somehow, miraculously, Jacob survives while Kat chooses not to save Cyrus. A mysterious figure appears, grabbing Jacob and whisking him to safety. This enigmatic figure turns out to be young Colton, who seems to have reappeared. With tears in his eyes, he declares “I’m the one responsible for all this” before disappearing once more.
Del struggles with her memories of Colton in The Way Home Season 3 Episode 8
In Episode 8 of Season 3 called “The Way Home,” another storyline unfolds. Del is grappling with the idea that Colton might have suspected Jacob wasn’t truly dead since then, and had been leading the teen to believe Fern was talking nonsense back in 1974. She confronts a modern-day representation of him about why he didn’t trust her during all those years.
Del implies that Kat and Alice are capable of providing him with the solutions he requires, but this is something Alice cannot do for him. Furthermore, we observe Nick struggling with the decision of whether or not to revisit Port Haven, and potentially returning Alice’s locket from season 1 to her.
We now know where Colton came from in Episode 2
In Cyrus’s passionate speech to the townsfolk regarding Elijah, the scene shifts to Colton sprinting through the forest and cannonballing into a pond. Upon resurfacing, Alice encounters him in the previously shown setting. He queries about the farm’s condition, to which Alice responds, “Everything’s fine. Why do you ask?
