Following a lifetime filled with death orchestrated by a wind-up toy, The Monkey raises the stakes, setting Hal and Bill against each other in a final, climactic confrontation (beware: significant spoilers lie ahead!).
In the story The Monkey, some mysteries remain unresolved, such as:
1) Where did the monkey acquire its powers?
2) How did Hal and Bill’s father obtain the toy?
However, given how enjoyable the tale is, these details of the backstory or lore are not crucial to appreciate it.
In contrast to the Stephen King novel, the film’s conclusion significantly deviates as instead of throwing the monkey into a lake, causing the death of all the fish, the character Hal (formerly known as Dennis) disposes of the monkey differently.
As a gaming enthusiast diving into this narrative, let me tell you, the latest flick’s portrayal of the storyline is significantly more thrilling and chock-full of pulse-pounding action. If you think I’m exaggerating, take a look at this detailed account of all that unfolds.
Hal and Petey are kidnapped
As I’m gradually getting worked up about what the return of this blasted monkey might imply for me and my boy, there comes a rap at our motel room door. It’s Ricky, the kid who initially offloaded the monkey to Bill. However, he’s got a hitch: he wants it back, and you can sense the monkey’s influence in his request. (Such is the enigmatic charm of this cursed creature.)
Wearing an outdated police uniform belonging to his dad, he impersonates an officer, coercing Hal and Petey into his vehicle with a gun. His intention is to trick them into breaking into Bill’s secret warehouse, where they would retrieve the monkey for him.
Regrettably, upon arrival, it’s only Petey who can squeeze through the pet door, forcing Hal to remain outside, essentially a captive in Ricky’s vehicle.
Petey quietly slips inside, skillfully dodging Bill’s strategically placed tripwires. Upon reaching the upper floor, he encounters a transformed Bill – a darker, more sinister version of his old self, sporting an impressive mullet haircut.

After getting to know his nephew, Bill does his best to persuade Petey to turn the key.
Rickey gets killed by bees
In the vehicle, Ricky continues to grip Hal. When Ricky becomes overly enthusiastic, he unintentionally discharges the gun, creating a big opening in the windshield.
Later, as Hal raises his gaze, he notices a beehive suspended from the tree directly overhead. (It’s clear that something is about to transpire.) Nervous, Hal requests they reverse the car, but Ricky silences him.
Finally, upstairs, Petey reaches out and turns the key, causing the monkey to bang his drum.
As anticipated, the nest landed on the vehicle. A solitary bee emerged to investigate, only for the whole nest to burst forth unexpectedly at a remarkable pace…right into Ricky’s open mouth.
Ricky suddenly starts suffocating due to the insects, and shortly afterward, he’s no longer alive. Then, bees start emerging from his body, and his jaw disintegrates, with Hal watching in shock. In a flash, he manages to escape and rush into the warehouse to rescue his son.
Bill’s plan for the monkey is revealed
Upon arrival, Bill unveils his intricate scheme. He’s long been aware of the incident involving Hal as a child, when in an attempt to harm Bill, Hal let loose the monkey on their mother. As retribution for losing their shared parent, he’s spent his life tracking down that monkey, hoping to find the key to ultimately take revenge on Hal.
This surge in local deaths is due to a significant cause. Regardless of Bill’s persistent attempts, the monkey continues to bypass Hal as its potential next target.
Bill, agitated and enraged, snatches the monkey in a bid to make it hit the drum. However, this monkey isn’t easily controlled and instead leaps across the room. In an unexpected turn of events, it begins rapidly pounding on the drum with great haste.
It appears that someone will be affected next when a small airplane collides with the rooftop of the warehouse. Following this crash, a woman in a wedding dress plummets through the ceiling, already deceased.
Gazing upon the landscape, Hal witnesses chaos and sorrow unfolding. Flames are rapidly advancing, vehicles collide mid-air, and anguished cries echo from afar. It appears that the mischief of the monkey has reached its peak, leading to the imminent demise of those in the nearby vicinity.
Bill gets a taste of his own medicine
Hal shifts focus towards Bill, choosing to let bygones be bygones from their past. He recalls that Bill had also lost his mother. Eventually, Bill relents, and after some nostalgic, slower-than-usual gestures, he ultimately shakes hands with his brother and receives assistance in standing up.
Nonetheless, the newly established accord doesn’t endure for much time. In a twist similar to one of Bill’s devious plans, a bowling ball suspended from above suddenly strikes him, resulting in an immediate and gruesome demise. This tragic event echoes young Hal’s earlier fantasy of harming his brother in a similar manner.
Hal and Petey make it out alive
Hal and Petey depart, carrying the monkey along with them. They mutually understand that it’s on them to conceal it, as this might be the sole method to prevent it from causing harm to others.
Leaving their vehicle, the early sunlight breaks over the horizon, revealing to them the wreckage before their eyes. Burning prams and fallen bodies litter the area, making it painfully obvious that they are among a small number of survivors still breathing.
While stopped at a crossroad, they observed a faint figure on a horse leisurely passing by. (The rider was pale, indicating he was Death.)
Similar to how his mother used to invite him and Bill to dance when they were young, Hal suggests the same to Petey now. Essentially, life is short and unpredictable, so let’s enjoy it while we can.
In unison, the father and his child journey off into the horizon. After they’ve vanished, a bus filled with cheerleaders passes by. As these young ladies waved their pom-poms and cheered, an accelerating truck appeared, abruptly dividing the girls at the waist, resulting in a gory scene.
The Monkey is playing in theaters now.
