‘The Sandman’ First Look at Season 2 Reveals Loki, Thor and Odin, and the Endless’ ‘Family Dinner’

As a lifelong fan of Neil Gaiman’s works, I eagerly await the second season of “The Sandman” on Netflix. The behind-the-scenes sneak peek has only heightened my anticipation, especially with the introduction of the Norse gods and Dream’s other siblings. The casting seems spot-on, and I can hardly wait to see Laurence O’Fuarain as Thor, Freddie Fox as Loki, and Clive Russell as Odin in action.

On Thursday, Netflix unveiled an exclusive sneak peek at the second season of “The Sandman,” based on Neil Gaiman’s DC comic book series. This glimpse was part of their Geeked Week marketing campaign. Season 2 will follow the “Season of Mists” storyline from the comics, where Lucifer (played by Gwendoline Christie) steps down from ruling Hell and gives Morpheus, or Dream (portrayed by Tom Sturridge), the key to its gates. This action sets off a chain of events as numerous immortals attempt to persuade Morpheus to hand over the key to them.

The backstage video offers a sneak peek into one such group: the Norse deities Thor (Laurence O’Fuarain), Loki (Freddie Fox) and Odin (Clive Russell). According to executive producer and showrunner Allan Heinberg, this gathering is described as a “feast” that Dream invites “all the visiting divine beings and fairies.” This event, it seems, is for various gods and deities.

The short clip also hints at the arrival of Dream’s other siblings: Destiny (Adrian Lester), Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles), and the Prodigal (Barry Sloane). They all gather for a family meal with the rest of the Endless, which includes Death (Kirby), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), and Despair (Donna Preston).

In addition to the returning cast for Season 2, we have some exciting newcomers: Ruairi O’Connor portrays Dream’s son Orpheus, Ann Skelly takes on the role of Nuala, Douglas Booth becomes Cluracan, Jack Gleeson steps into the character of Puck, Indya Moore joins as Wanda, and Steve Coogan lends his voice to Barnabas the dog.

As a passionate cinephile, I found it interesting to see Sturridge, Kirby, Heinberg, and director Jamie Childs featured in the recent interview, but I couldn’t help but notice the absence of Neil Gaiman himself from the conversation. This is noteworthy given the ongoing allegations against him that he has denied.

Season 2 of “The Sandman,” which is produced by Warner Bros. TV, is set to debut in 2025.
