As a seasoned movie enthusiast who’s seen more cop dramas than I can count, this news about “The Rookie” spinoff has me feeling like I just found a hidden stash of donuts on a late-night patrol. The idea of another show from the same universe is intriguing, and the fact that it’s set in Washington state adds a fresh twist to the storyline.
A new spinoff of “The Rookie” is in the works at ABC, EbMaster has confirmed.
The unnamed venture originates from renowned creator Alexi Hawley, known for “The Rookie.” According to its official summary, this series unfolds in Washington state and revolves around a middle-aged man embarking on a fresh chapter of his life as a police officer.
The series is jointly produced by Liongate Television and what used to be 20th Television (now part of a restructured unit within Disney). Lionsgate gained ownership of the show following their acquisition of eOne in late 2023. Prior to this, ABC Signature was one of the studios involved with the show, but it was later merged into 20th TV as part of a company reorganization at Disney. The series will be written and overseen by Hawley, who will also serve as an executive producer. Additionally, Nathan Fillion, star of “The Rookie,” along with Michelle Chapman and Bill Norcross, will also serve as executive producers on the project.
The news emerges with “The Rookie” gearing up for the premiere of its seventh season in January. Since it first aired in 2018, the series has been a reliable hit on ABC.
If the new series moves ahead, it will mark the second spin-off of “The Rookie” so far. During its fourth season, ABC commissioned a two-part pilot episode that featured Niecy Nash Betts as Simone Clark, a 40-year-old FBI Special Agent. This was followed by the spin-off series titled “The Rookie: Feds,” which premiered on ABC in 2022 but ran for only one season.
Back in April when it was confirmed that Season 7 would continue, ABC revealed that the Season 6 debut attracted 11.9 million viewers across all available platforms using the Live+35 ratings system, which marked the series’ highest viewership since 2018. The main cast for this show includes Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan, Shawn Ashmore, Tru Valentino, and Lisseth Chavez, alongside Nathan Fillion.
Deadline first reported the development news.
