The Rookie Is Reclaiming Its Lost Glory By Going Back To Basics

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for The Rookie season 8, episode 14, “Tiger Bear.” In a surprising move, The Rookie seems to be returning to its original style, possibly to regain its previous success. While the show isn’t performing well in traditional live and same-day TV ratings, it’s still popular thanks to streaming and social media. This makes The Rookie an important part of the network’s plans for the 2025-2026 television season.

As The Rookie continues, it’s taking bigger swings with its stories. While it hasn’t reached the iconic status of shows like Law & Order, NCIS, or 9-1-1 just yet, the series has established a strong base that could allow it to continue for many seasons. Season 8 started with a bold operation in Prague and featured several unique cases. However, as good as these complex storylines are, sometimes a simple, well-told case is the most impactful – and that’s exactly what “Tiger Bear” delivers.

Celina’s Missing Persons’ Journey Is Classic The Rookie Storytelling

In season 8, episode 14 of The Rookie, Celina starts a new temporary assignment working alongside a detective. She decides to join the Missing Persons unit, which surprises her colleagues due to Detective Hernandez’s difficult reputation. Despite her temporary boss’s negativity, Celina is eager to take on the job, driven by her personal connection to finding missing people – a commitment stemming from her own sister’s experience.

The basic storyline seems a bit straightforward and less ambitious than previous episodes in season 8 of The Rookie. However, the episode “Tiger Bear” tells this story in a way that really works. It’s moving to see Celina handle a difficult case, especially because she understands what it’s like to be left in the dark about a loved one’s fate. She’s so dedicated to finding answers that even after a tough investigation, she asks Hernandez to contact her when he has another case for her.

The Rookie Needs To Get Back To It Simple But Compelling Cases (& Celina Is The Perfect Character For It)

It’s great that the creators of The Rookie are trying new things each week. Changing the format keeps the show interesting and prevents it from becoming predictable. However, too many changes can feel rushed and chaotic, which isn’t ideal for a standard police procedural. Introducing Celina’s storyline in “Tiger Bear” suggests the show is returning to a more familiar style of storytelling, allowing them to explore this plot whenever a new missing person case lands on Hernandez’s plate.

Although The Rookie could use any character in this type of story, Celina is the ideal choice to lead it. Lisseth Chavez hasn’t been on the show for very long, leaving plenty of room to develop Celina’s personal life. However, she’s been on long enough that viewers are already interested in seeing what happens to her next.
