The Rock Is About Power, Drive, Moana

As I gaze upon the image of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. It seems like just yesterday when we were all basking in the enchanting world of Disney’s Moana, and here we are, seven years later, with The Rock returning to the magical land of Polynesia.

Back in November 23, 2016, we were still quite young. “Closer” by the Chainsmokers was dethroned on the Hot 100 by “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd. Laurie Hernandez had recently triumphed in Dancing With the Stars. Donald Trump had been elected President, but not yet faced indictment. And let’s not forget, Moana was released that year. Fast forward to now, less than seven years later, and we see the Chainsmokers performing in Las Vegas, gymnasts competing in the DwtS finale, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announcing a live-action adaptation of Moana. How time flies! Here’s what we know so far, including a sneak peek of The Rock as Maui.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t contain my enthusiasm at the thought of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as Maui, diving back into the captivating world of Moana. My daughters have been tasked with fetching my magical staff, and reminiscing about it brings a smile to my face. It’s incredible how my grandfather’s influence helped shape this iconic character. Here’s hoping this level of excitement bodes well for the upcoming project; after all, I remember The Rock was just as excited for Black Adam… and we know what happened there!

What does the Rock look like as live-action Maui?

In a surprising twist, it appears that the shampoo salesman, Johnson, is sporting a mane on screen for his role as Maui! Backstage snaps have been leaked showing Johnson in character, dressed in a latex tattooed suit, grass skirt, and necklace, complete with a long-haired wig. Although there haven’t been many other set photos released, we do get a glimpse of what some of the movie’s props might look like in relation to Johnson’s impressive physique. Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment co-chairman, even posted a picture of himself with Maui’s fish hook. One can’t help but wonder what the rest of the cast will bring to the table!

Who will be live-action Moana?

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t hide my enthusiasm about stepping into Auli‘i Cravalho’s shoes as the lead in Moana. In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, I expressed my eagerness to embody this character because Moana holds a special place in my heart. You see, my grandparents hail from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i and Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. This role offers me an incredible opportunity to celebrate my Samoan heritage and represent young girls who resemble me. I feel deeply honored by this chance. Incidentally, my father, Jay, had a memorable stint as Captain Typho in the Star Wars prequels.

Additionally, John Tui is set to portray Moana’s father, Frankie Adams takes the role of Moana’s mother, and Rena Owen is cast as Gramma Tala. It remains undecided whether Alan Tudyk will utilize his Julliard skills to voice the character HeiHei.

When does Moana set sail?

Disney has set the premiere of live-action Moana for July 10, 2026.
