As I race faster than a speeding bucket and effortlessly leap over towering concession stands in a single bound, it’s clear that I’m not just any moviegoer – I’m a fan of the upcoming summer blockbuster, “Superman,” directed by James Gunn! Movie theaters are pulling out all the stops with merchandise for this highly anticipated superhero film, and as always, the popcorn buckets take center stage. AMC’s bucket cleverly disguises itself as a Daily Planet newspaper box, while Cinemark’s is an irresistibly cute recreation of Superman’s beloved canine companion, Krypto.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on two unique Regal offerings: a popcorn-machine heat-ray bucket and another Krypto. While both are impressive, one truly outshines the other when it comes to demonstrating superpowers!

Design

Pondering over the aesthetics of this bucket, considering its inventiveness, meticulous craftsmanship, and the likelihood that I’d be comfortable reaching into it.

As a cinema enthusiast, I must say that the “heat-ray bucket” is simply remarkable, even though it’s part of the DC universe. It’s a delightfully imaginative idea, serving as a subtle commentary on the production process of the popcorn we all love. Essentially, it’s a miniature popcorn machine model, where Superman, through the “glass,” shoots laser beams that cook the kernels. It’s almost like a snapshot from a Silver Age Superman comic, and I appreciate how they manage to seamlessly blend his powers into the world of popcorn. In essence, it’s a dynamic and playful design that never fails to bring a smile to my face when I see it.

The puppy connected to the “Krypto container” has touched its outer material, luckily it doesn’t cover his paws, which are made of plastic and stick out from the bucket as if he’s clinging to the edge. He’s quite heavy and can balance on a showcase shelf by himself, but I find the container rather dull and think Krypto appears rather similar to Funko Pop characters. (In comparison, Cinemark’s version of Krypto is beautifully detailed.)

Heat-ray score: 5 out of 5
Krypto score: 3 out of 5

Functionality

Let’s examine the functionality and longevity of the bucket’s adjustable parts, and find out if it’s simple for someone to retrieve popcorn when they’re comfortably seated in the cinema.

The heat-ray bucket sports a convenient back door latch for hassle-free popcorn loading and consumption. I appreciate its transparency, allowing me to easily check on my popcorn, and I find the size of the opening quite practical. Pouring popcorn or even reaching in with my hand is effortless. On the other hand, the Krypto bucket is your typical bucket, but the worry of staining its white felt with greasy butter topping makes it less efficient as a popcorn container for me.

Volume

How much popcorn fits in the bucket?

Both containers, namely the heat-emitting bucket and the Krypto bucket, were capable of holding a substantial amount of popcorn. During our tests, the heat-emitting bucket managed to accommodate an eight-ounce bag of popcorn with some extra space on top for additional kernels, while the Krypto bucket was equally capable of fitting the entire bag as well.

Both score: 5 out of 5

Value

Evaluating if the bucket’s creativity, quality, and sentimental value justify its cost.

For $49.95, the heat-ray bucket might seem pricey, but remember that collectors who frequently invest in merchandise for their favorite fandoms often spend this much. The Superman figurine showcases an adorable pose, and if you desire, it can also function as a display case. In my opinion, it’s worth the investment.

The “Krypto Bucket,” priced at $39.95, features an integrated Krypto toy that serves as its own plaything, and its practicality stems from being a standard, inexpensive, round bucket. However, this price tag may appear high when considering it as a purchase for a child, the intended audience for its design.

Heat-ray score: 4 out of 5
Krypto score: 3 out of 5

Verdict

Heat-ray final score: 18 out of 20
Krypto final score: 14 out of 20

Although the Krypto pail may receive a passing grade for the category of “Bucket or Chuck It?”, it’s important to note that this is not Regal’s sturdiest Superman pail. In fact, it’s not even the strongest Krypto bucket available on the market. However, for those who prefer a more compact and adorable style of merchandise (chibi), this might be just right. When comparing the two Superman buckets at Regal, the heat-ray pail stands out as the clear winner. I must say, I’m quite smitten by its innovative design that mimics the industrial machinery of movie theater popcorn. Whoever thought up this idea certainly has a creative mind!
