Bravo was facing a real problem. Attempts to revive old shows weren’t working, and many programs were being delayed. They needed a solution quickly! The network scrambled to its secret production hub – a hidden lab beneath the Watch What Happens Live studio – and desperately tried to create something new. A slight mishap resulted in seven clones of Dolores Catania, but it ultimately led to the creation of The Real Housewives of Rhode Island, Bravo’s first new series in four years. They hoped it would capture the same magic as The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and based on the first episode, it seems they succeeded.
Like its predecessor, Jersey Shore, this show highlights the long-standing relationships between the cast members – connections that go back decades. It’s complicated! Think shared childhood memories like First Communions, sibling rivalry over boys in high school, and years spent together at the tanning salon. And now, after all that shared history, the women are featured holding…clams. Surprisingly, they’ve swapped the elegant pearls seen in promotional photos for clams in the show’s opening credits.
The very first person we meet is Alicia, and honestly, her New England accent is instantly charming. She asks for “any colah” of wine and sweetly admits she and her daughter are both fans of “Britney Speahs.” She’s hosting a huge Italian family gathering, and the drama starts immediately – her aunts were already complaining about the long drive from Cranston to Providence (which, we quickly find out, is only fifteen minutes!). It was a perfect start to the show, and it didn’t take long for them to start questioning Alicia about her nine-year engagement. But the moment I was truly hooked? When the conversation somehow turned to Alicia’s friend Liz, and Liz’s mother casually dropped that she has a “very big fear of frogs.” Seriously, out of nowhere! I’m already hoping this seemingly random detail will come back into play later – it feels like a classic setup for something big. I haven’t even seen Liz yet, but I absolutely need to witness her confronting a frog, and I need to understand why Alicia’s mother is so certain about this phobia.
Alicia and Liz have been friends since birth, and Alicia jokingly calls Liz ‘Queen Elizabeth’ – a nickname that fits considering the medieval-themed decorations in Liz’s home. Liz also playfully refers to herself as the ‘Queen of Weed’ because she and her husband own a cannabis shop. Interestingly, they discovered they were related about six months after getting married through an ancestry website, but Liz avoids explaining exactly how they’re connected. We then see Liz take a boat to have lunch with Kelsey, the show’s youngest cast member, whom Liz knows through Kelsey’s much older boyfriend – they all grew up together.
Watching Kelsey meticulously remove lemon seeds from her drink—a classic behavior often seen in potential Real Housewives—reveals a lot about her life. It turns out she’s financially dependent on an older boyfriend who remains largely hidden, even his face blurred in photos. Their unusual arrangement allows him to date others while he spends half the year in Miami, and she’s expected to accept it. For a decade, she’s enjoyed a comfortable, leisurely lifestyle, but now, approaching 30, she’s questioning whether she wants a more serious commitment, knowing he likely won’t change. Stories like hers are why I’m grateful the Real Housewives franchise exists – it offers a potential path forward for women in similar situations.
Now, let’s meet Jo-Ellen, one of the new clam owners, and learn about her complicated love life. She and her husband, Gary, were high school sweethearts, but her sister, Jen, was also interested in him first. Alicia hints there might have been more to that story, even suggesting some scandalous rumors, but we’ll explore that later in the season. Through Jo-Ellen, we also see the start of the first major conflict of the series, a feud with Rosie.
Rosie used to be a news reporter, but now she hosts a local lifestyle show called Rhode Trippin. Jo-Ellen mentions it only has 215 views, though she adds that’s not bad considering how small Rhode Island is. The women are connected through a mutual acquaintance – Rosie got Botox from the best friend of one of them. Rosie’s been married for a year to someone she claims isn’t a Frank Sinatra impersonator. Honestly, everything these women say is wilder than the last thing, and I’m loving it.
For a segment on her show, Rosie is hosting a beach picnic for some female friends, including Jo-Ellen, who she’s hoping will be on her best behavior. She’s also invited Alicia and Ashley, who viewers may recognize from Bachelor in Paradise – she met her husband, Jared, who is from Rhode Island, on the show. Now a couple and influencers, Ashley and Jared own a coffee shop, but Ashley has been finding it hard to fit in with the close-knit Rhode Island community. It looks like she’s starting to embrace the local culture, though – she showed up to the picnic with Dunkin’ coffee!
After speaking with a company executive, Rosie (who’s being compared to a trusted news anchor) joins the women as they quickly start chatting at a picnic table. Jo-Ellen lets everyone know Kelsey is having a tough time, and Rosie seems to mentally note this for future use. The conversation eventually leads to a game of “Never Have I Ever,” where Jo-Ellen reveals she’s quite experienced – admitting to both a threesome and, well, some adventurous behavior! This prompts Rosie to ask if Kelsey practices polygamy. But Jo-Ellen, already a seasoned reality TV personality, skillfully avoids the drama. She simply replies, “You should ask her yourself,” refusing to take the bait.
There’s tension because Rosie is complaining, but Jo-Ellen points out that Rosie did the same thing to her last time they all met – criticizing her wine and making harsh personal comments. Jo-Ellen admits she feels the same way, even if she didn’t say it directly. It’s clear there’s going to be drama. Surprisingly, despite upsetting Rosie with these comments, Jo-Ellen still invites her to her Fourth of July party, along with Ashley, who is just glad to be included and have friends.
So, what’s the Fourth of July actually about? Jo-Ellen honestly admitted she didn’t know on TV, which is great – it’s refreshing to see that on the show. I’d love to see her try explaining the history of all holidays, actually. Rosie really wants to impress the hostess and brings fireworks and expensive Champagne, but Liz one-ups her with an even better gift: Dolores Catania.
These two women look so much alike—it turns out they even have the same plastic surgeon and dentist! They initially met at a cannabis convention, and now Dolores happens to be renting a summer home in Rhode Island right when the show is filming. It feels like Dolores is acting as a guide or mentor to the newer cast members, helping them navigate this new series. She easily falls into that role, carefully listening to Jo-Ellen as she tells Kelsey about the drama at the picnic, and even encourages the hostess to welcome Rosie.
Kelsey is definitely facing the most scrutiny right now. However, joining the Real Housewives cast while your boyfriend is publicly with another woman in Miami means some attention was inevitable. Still, she’s upset, but Rosie skillfully deflects the issue, much like Luann de Lesseps evading trouble. Rosie claims she was simply curious, then quickly turns the tables, suggesting Jo-Ellen was the one who initially mentioned Kelsey’s struggles. These women are pros and have quickly found their footing on the show.
After just one episode, this season is already packed with drama! We’ve got a long-delayed wedding, people trying out polyamory hesitantly, spouses who are family, a failed TV show, cheating scandals involving a sister’s boyfriend, and a Bachelor contestant who seems to cry constantly. Plus, there’s still another Housewife we haven’t met yet, and I’m hoping she brings something completely unexpected – like a pet frog!
