The Real Housewives of Rhode Island Recap: Wrong Side of the Tracks

On top of everything else that happened at the Studio 54 party, Liz now has a bizarre problem: Gary mistakenly ordered six bunches of bananas instead of just six bananas! She’s putting the banana situation on hold for now, though, because she’s still reeling from how she acted. She tells Dolores she came across as a “bitter, drunken, witch” – a description that, she jokes, probably perfectly matched the show’s casting call.

Ashley took some of the women to her favorite beach, but Alicia was completely out of her element. Used to the comfort of her country club, she was scared and overwhelmed, even whispering that this wasn’t for her as she struggled to carry her chair, bag, and snacks. The snacks turned out to be something called “pizza chips” – basically just bread with tomato sauce. Alicia, who owns a pizza restaurant, started explaining the science of why cheese doesn’t do well in the sun, but honestly, the pizza chips themselves were enough to get my attention.

It was shocking to learn that Rulla and Brian supposedly had an affair while he was married to Alicia’s high school Spanish teacher. Alicia shared this with a worried expression, saying she hopes it’s not true because she really liked her teacher. It’s amazing how connected all these women are – it feels like everyone knows everyone else! I also found it funny that Alicia started a sentence by saying, “I don’t know if this is true,” and I think it would be even better if she said it in Spanish.

It turns out Jo-Ellen’s sister and her husband had a connection back in high school. Now, we’re being introduced to Jen, who is house-sitting while Jo-Ellen is away for work. Jo-Ellen says Jen playfully flirts with her husband, but insists nothing is happening. However, Jen jokingly refers to them as an old married couple, and Jo-Ellen reveals Jen has even joked about wanting to use his sperm to have a baby…though she claims everything else is normal! I’m starting to think about potential future characters who could hold the clams, and right now Jen and Alicia’s Spanish teacher are the frontrunners.

The supporting characters really shine, especially Alicia’s aunts, who are a welcome sight at a backyard get-together. They’re the perfect group to give Rulla honest advice about her relationship with Brian. As soon as Rulla hints at problems, the aunts – a fantastic group of divorced women – immediately urge her to leave him. One of them asks a pointed question: “Do you want to spend your life constantly worrying?” and Rulla later admits those words really resonated with her. It feels like we’re seeing a more genuine side of Rulla, and she’s starting to drop her polished facade. However, the most memorable line comes from Alicia’s mother, who bluntly states she hopes Rulla gets revenge. Honestly, forget the usual post-show interviews – I’d much rather watch Alicia’s aunts reacting to and commenting on each episode. That show would undoubtedly be a ratings hit, even bigger than the finale of MASH.

Liz and Kelsey finally had a much-needed conversation to address their ongoing issues. The meeting took place by Liz’s boat, and honestly, it felt a little like a tense scene from The Sopranos – I kept reminding myself this was reality TV and Kelsey was probably safe! Thankfully, the conversation went surprisingly well. Liz explained she felt hurt that Kelsey seemed to be validating the rumors, while Kelsey revealed her reluctance to let Liz get close to Dino stemmed from a bad experience they had ten years ago. She admitted she still has a strong negative reaction to him and avoids him because of it, but understands Liz values their friendship. While some things are still unclear, Liz and Kelsey were able to resolve their conflict and make amends.

Thankfully, everyone could then enjoy rail biking without interruption. The women split into groups and cycled three miles along an old railway line, drinks in hand. Alicia called out, “Rullala, how are you doing back there?” which instantly made me happy – I’m completely obsessed with that word! It’s become my personal motto, something I say at least 50 times a day – it’s a greeting, a little wish for good luck, and a way to approach life. Even better, seeing Rulla on camera finally won me over. While cycling, she was shaking a cocktail shaker and pouring tequila into a wine glass. Forget Brian and his drama, she’s the one I want to watch!

I absolutely loved seeing a different side of Rulla when they arrived and she found out how tough Alicia’s financial situation was. Hearing Alicia talk about feeling undervalued – her husband wouldn’t even put her name on the house or business – and then watching Rulla, as a financial planner, immediately step in to help was fantastic. It was so much more interesting than seeing her constantly making excuses for her unfaithful husband. Honestly, it gave me a real sense of what Rulla could be like if she ever decided to become truly independent on the show – maybe in a season or two. It was a genuinely compelling moment.

Alicia is getting support from Kelsey, who is helping her practice confronting her boyfriend, Billy, through role-playing. It’s funny how people notice these women look alike, but honestly, it’s harder to keep track of all their partners’ similar names – Billy, Bill, Brian, Gary, Gerry, Jared, and at least Rosie’s boyfriend is just Rich! The role-play session is really emotional, and Alicia admits Billy makes her feel worthless. It’s good they’re addressing this, and hopefully Alicia will eventually be able to share these feelings with Billy directly. And if he doesn’t take her seriously, I’m hoping her aunts will step in!

The conversation shifted to how Liz was getting along with the new cast member, Ashley, and they playfully acknowledged Ashley seemed a bit intimidated by her. When the topic turned to a Studio 54 party, Liz admitted it wasn’t one of her better moments and didn’t reflect who she truly is. Rosie then tried to blame Alicia, saying Ashley always acts that way, which Alicia immediately challenged. “Don’t try to make me look bad or put words in my mouth!” she exclaimed, as Dolores watched with amusement. Alicia accused Rosie of twisting her words and being deliberately provocative, adding that Rosie had wronged her. What followed was a rapid-fire series of memorable outbursts, including “Welcome to Rhode Island, bitch, this is how we roll,” “Fucking thirsty bitch, so thirsty it’s scary,” and finally, “I need to get out of here cause I’m gonna end up killing her.” This last comment marked the first threat of physical violence!

The most surprising moment happened when Alicia and Rosie briefly left the group. It looked like Alicia was about to confront Rosie privately, and some viewers even joked she might attack! Alicia simply told Rosie to apologize, which she did, and immediately things were okay. Someone in the group was shocked and asked if they had just hugged! This quick resolution is a really good sign for the show’s future. The key to a successful Housewives series is the cast’s ability to get incredibly angry with each other, then quickly move past it. Lingering feuds don’t make for good TV—as Real Housewives of Beverly Hills has shown—so this cast’s willingness to reconcile is what will likely make this show a hit.
