The Real Housewives of Orange County Recap: Par for the Course

As a long-time fan of this reality TV drama, I must say that this season of The Real Housewives of Orange County is shaping up to be quite the rollercoaster ride! From financial fallouts and lawsuits to golf games gone awry, it seems like our favorite OC ladies are facing more challenges than ever before.

As Jenn Pedranti navigates the challenges of potential eviction, Heather and Terry Dubrow kick off this week’s episode, enjoying the vista from their LA penthouse and attempting to spot their Beverly Hills mansion in the distance. “Do you see our house from here? Or is that Drake’s house?” she queries. Their affluence seems almost like a caricature of wealth, reminiscent of what a child (or some of her fellow cast members) might envision when they think about being extremely wealthy.

In simpler terms, the cast members who reside in Orange County (as depicted in the show) had an evening reminiscent of “Coyote Ugly” at a local bar they deemed as dives by Real Housewife standards. However, this casual night out transformed into a gathering known as the Anti-Heather Dubrow Club, with Tamra Judge presiding. The main topic was Katie presenting evidence that the photos Heather denied staging at Disneyland last year were indeed staged. This revelation has been long awaited, as it has kept many sleepless nights this past year. Katie claims her friend is responsible for managing paparazzi and confirmed the staging. Regardless of my indifference, I’ve put in less effort to stage candid photos for social media.

Regarding matters that don’t interest me much – the main topic for discussion during this meeting is the intriguing incident involving Heather tagging Katie in an Instagram selfie. Some people seem to believe it’s a secret scheme, but perhaps she’s simply clumsy with technology? They find it mysterious and psychologically perplexing, yet Heather explains that she has a social media assistant, who likely intended to tag Givenchy (the brand of the dress she was wearing) instead of Katie’s last name “Ginella,” after accidentally typing “Gi.”

In simpler terms, it seems that the issues between Katie and Heather stem from an incident at Sutton’s party where Heather allegedly slighted Katie, but we haven’t witnessed this event ourselves, making it difficult to fully understand or empathize with their conflict. It feels like Katie may have been assigned Heather as her rival when she joined the show, and she’s playing the part based on what we’ve seen so far, but there’s not enough background information to build a genuine feud upon. I find myself in an unusual position of defending the wealthy, like Heather, which feels strange; it’s as if I were a politician.

Following a near celebration for Heather Dubrow’s putdown, the patrons shifted their focus towards dismantling the bar itself. They hopped onto the counter, downed liquor directly from bottles, and sprayed each other (and the entire room) with soda foam sprays… all while the staff watched in horror. Here’s to hoping they left a generous tip for the upscale venue.

At Shannon’s residence, we encounter two well-known figures – Archie Beador and Vicki Gunvalson, including the health complications. She shares her medical journey with us candidly, which I wouldn’t trade for anything else. However, beyond the medical matters, they need to transform their Tres Amigas stage show into a Dos Amigas performance due to their disagreement, similar to Zayn Malik leaving One Direction, Jesy Nelson departing Little Mix, or Geri Halliwell exiting the Spice Girls – but this time, it’s an American version. Fortunately, these friends are ready to carry on as a duo, just like Ethel and Louise might. Vicki even compares their dynamic to Ethel and Louise, disregarding Lucy and Thelma.

Now, it’s important to remember that before all else, Vicki Gunvalson is a businesswoman — so for her, Tamra’s most grievous offense here is that she’s derailing their business venture. They had an LLC! They had merchandise! A brand to think of! “She has vinegar running through her veins and a black heart,” Vicki says about Tamra during a confessional, proving that she’s still one of our finest wordsmiths.

Not only does Shannon learn that John Janssen is suing her for $75,000, but it seems Alexis Bellino’s romantic interests often lead to lawsuits against Shannon Beador. Vicki shares this observation in a confessional, stating she had always seen John as a questionable character, yet believed Shannon needed to learn this on her own, recalling the Brooks debacle we all witnessed. It’s interesting to note that both Brooks and John left the show with new teeth, leading Vicki to wonder if there might be a pattern here. At least John didn’t fake cancer like Brooks did. Fortunately, Vicki is there for Shannon during this tough time, trying to lighten the mood by commenting on Shannon’s uneven breasts.

In relation to ongoing discussions about financial difficulties, it’s clear that Jenn’s money troubles remain a hot topic among the group. Specifically, Gina and Emily seem to persistently criticize her about it, which now appears rather unpleasant. While Gina argues that she should discuss it due to its potential effect on her real estate ventures, Emily seems to take delight in mocking her. It seems these two have long felt powerless during their time on the show, and now they find a target in Jenn. They scrutinize her actions, often criticizing her for spending money on necessities like personal care items, and even teasing her for trips with Ryan. However, one could argue that if she wins big at gambling, this entire issue might be resolved swiftly!

Speaking of Katie versus Heather, it’s worth mentioning that Katie is acquainted with Cynthia Bailey, someone we all could learn to admire. Cynthia shared with Katie that Heather was inquiring about her at what appeared to be a mixer among the L.A. Housewives. This tidbit might seem like a big deal, but truthfully, it’s quite normal to ask such questions. However, if this interaction leads to Cynthia making an appearance, I can certainly tolerate the drama as a way to make that happen.

In the midst of Katie’s golf event, a gathering I was part of, an unexpected turn of events unfolded. Katie, who’s known for her golf-centric persona on the show, attempted to name the event something that didn’t quite sit well with Shannon Beador, a former DUI recipient – “Drinking and Driving”. Thankfully, Heather suggested a modification before things escalated between them.

As a film enthusiast putting this into first-person narrative, here’s my attempt: When the moment arrives for us to meet, Heather flatly refutes the allegation against her, struggling to comprehend Katie’s relentless fixation on her. In fact, she vehemently swears on the lives of her beloved children that she had nothing to do with calling the paparazzi—and when it comes to protecting her kids, Heather Dubrow leaves no room for compromise.

It’s only then that we get to view the screenshot that Katie had been hinting at earlier. In this shot, Katie inquires if Heather Dubrow called photographers to take pictures of her and her husband in public, to which an anonymous source responds affirmatively. However, there’s no evidence suggesting that Heather contacted the source directly as Katie suggested, and the screenshot itself admits that this was a storyline from ‘Real Housewives of Orange County’, thereby casting doubt on Katie’s claim about her lack of knowledge regarding last season’s events.

Initially, I was fully supporting Heather’s perspective, but then she uses a phrase familiar to Bravo viewers when a reality star encounters evidence. “There are tools that can manipulate that,” she said, referring to the screenshot. Although she may not know how to tag an Instagram post, she acknowledges the existence of technology capable of forging messages. This is a significant hit to her credibility, yet Heather remains resilient and maintains her stance, claiming Katie is the one behind all the accusations. Surprisingly, despite this quick misstep, Heather, being at the top of her game, presents a nearly impenetrable argument. She asserts that she barely knows Katie and now doubts if she even wants to continue their relationship. Challenging Heather Dubrow is no easy task, but someone has to do it.
