Among the things I cherish in life are sweet treats, certain personal matters, and pointing out to Shannon Beador when she seems excessively emotional. Despite her often justified concerns, Shannon tends to exaggerate situations, withdrawing from them unnecessarily, and portraying herself as a victim even for minor offenses. In her recent argument with Katie, which concludes this episode, I find myself having to set aside one of the things I enjoy most because, surprisingly, Shannon did not overreact this time. She is correct in choosing not to avoid talking to Katie, she is correct that recording someone without their consent is illegal in California, and she is correct to leave a situation with her third date from Love Hotel. While Katie may not be the most malicious individual, she isn’t even the most wicked we’ve encountered on this show. (Has there been any news about Brooks Ayers recently?) Although that assertion might have been an overstatement, Shannon’s reaction was entirely fitting for the circumstances.
The episode opens as the women gather in small groups a day following Katie’s hot-pot lunch, discussing yesterday’s events. During lunch, Shannon confides in Heather and Jenn that Katie had texted her an apology for recording her last year and showing it to Alexis. However, Katie’s apology comes with a significant caveat – much like Sir Mix-a-Lot returning to the music scene. Katie explains, “but” she only shared the recording (whether audio or video, I can’t recall) with her husband, Matt, and no one else. Shannon feels frustrated because she recently advised Katie on removing ‘buts’ from her apologies.
Shannon becomes even more agitated when Heather reveals that she spoke with Alexis, who claimed Katie had shown her a tape. Shannon can’t recall if Jenn was present or not. In her personal reflection, Katie insists Jenn was there, as it was a “triple date.” However, Katie’s explanations only create more confusion. If it was indeed a triple date, does that imply everyone’s partners were involved? This could potentially incriminate Shannon further if John Janssen heard the tape. But it also means Ryan might have been there, which could support Katie’s account about Jenn’s presence. However, whether Jenn was there or not is irrelevant to the main issue: Katie admitted playing the tape for Alexis at the hot-pot lunch, then denied it in both her apology text and at Heather’s party, and now claims she did show the tape to Alexis. It’s all very confusing and tiring.
The focus of discussion has shifted towards Heather inquiring about invitations for her extravagant birthday celebration. It’s clear that she’s planning this party six weeks post her actual birthday, and the location – a former Christian broadcasting network event space – along with the hefty price tag of over $125,000, isn’t causing any confusion among guests. However, they are puzzled about why Heather has invited both Tamra and Jenn, along with their respective partners.
Tamra claims her attorney advised her to steer clear of Ryan due to threats of a lawsuit. Despite Heather’s attempts to get them both at the party, she can’t seem to resolve their issues. She suggests that Jenn might avoid Ryan at the gathering, but Jenn refuses this proposition. Instead, Tamra proposes avoiding the party altogether rather than maintaining distance from Ryan within it.
It’s quite unexpected of Heather Dubrow, who is typically refined and thoughtful. If she anticipated this situation would lead to a standoff, why not simply extend party invitations to women? It’s reminiscent of Ramona Singer, inviting her numerous identical female friends to birthday celebrations. Given that all of Heather’s friends share the same three plastic surgeons, it seems plausible that the ladies would have enjoyed the setting with the woman serving Champagne, the sliders and fries, the cannabis bar, and the ice shot glasses for gong-throwing. This appears to be a straightforward solution that she might have inadvertently overlooked.
Over lunch, Jenn raises an intriguing observation: everyone seems to be distancing themselves from Katie and discouraging her friendship, while still associating with Tamra, who has wronged nearly every woman in their group. However, the validity of this criticism weakens when Jenn becomes emotional, causing a disturbance at the casual restaurant they were dining at. Jenn claims that Tamra mentioned an FBI raid on her home, which placed her and her family in danger and cost them legal fees. It’s puzzling why Jenn seems more concerned about Tamra’s claim of an FBI raid than she is about being associated with someone who puts her in a precarious position where such a raid could occur. The only reason Ryan wasn’t arrested in this situation was that he worked with the authorities. It’s hard to understand why Jenn would prioritize Tamra when she’s allowing a man known for questionable companionship to help raise her children, as it seems illogical.
It’s perplexing that Jenn’s sons’ situation regarding student loans seems unclear as well. Dawson, who recently turned 18 and is joining the Marines, was co-signed for a student loan by his father, Will, to help Harrison continue his studies at USC. This leaves me wondering about the process of obtaining student loans and why a parent is required as a co-signer. Furthermore, if Will is in such a dire financial situation that he needs a co-signer, it’s puzzling as to why the bank would accept an 18-year-old with no credit history and a military job. The whole scenario seems unusual, and I’m curious about the reasons behind these decisions.
Prior to Heather’s party, there’s a short break during which Emily, Gina, and Shannon go bowling with their respective partners. Shannon’s companion for the outing is Adam, one of the men she snubbed on “Love Hotel” in favor of Earl the Pearl. The casting department of “Love Hotel” deserves thanks for significantly improving Shannon’s social circle, as both Adam and Phil (who attends Heather’s party with her) are significant figures. It’s also worth noting that Shane Simpson owns a pair of bowling shoes, and his hidden talent for the sport seems almost too fitting. Everything is gradually falling into place in a somewhat predictable manner.
As Heather’s party approaches, Tamra chooses to skip it, much like Shannon who missed the mark three times with her shot glass and the giant gong. Jenn escorts a limping Ryan, who underwent knee surgery just yesterday, seemingly to make a statement. Sister, really? With his presence already straining your relationships, wasn’t that recent surgery a valid reason for him to take a pass on this gathering? Besides the intriguing revelation that Gretchen Rossi allegedly broke Slade Smiley’s manhood, leaving it permanently crooked, the main event is Katie’s standoff with Shannon. Frankly, discussing Slade’s injury feels like I’ve just exited a roller coaster after consuming a questionable batch of oysters. Despite my enthusiasm for talking about male anatomy, this topic leaves me feeling queasy.
Katie eventually feels it’s appropriate to discuss things with Shannon, hoping, as often happens, that Shannon will become emotional and start venting, making Katie appear more rational. But this time, instead of her usual outburst, Shannon abruptly ends their relationship (a dramatic gesture across the throat) in a way that seems genuine. Some might argue that since cameras are always present or because Shannon is in public, she has no expectation of privacy. However, this perspective overlooks the intention behind recording – these are reality stars and the footage could be misused by media outlets, bloggers, or the general public to harm the individual. This was particularly concerning as the video was shown to Alexis, who was currently involved in a lawsuit with Shannon. For reality TV stars, this is their worst fear realized. They have no control over the show’s content, but at least they expect the producers to abide by certain rules. If all cast members don’t adhere to these rules, the entire production and the women’s involvement could be jeopardized.
As Shannon exits, her companion Phil stands elsewhere within the room, watching the commotion unfold. He finds himself in an intriguing position. Although he appeared on “Love Hotel,” a reality show by Bravo, none of the contestants had viewed “Housewives.” This is his debut in filming a program other than a dating competition. Curious about the situation, he queries someone off-screen (perhaps Jenn, who previously guided him away so Katie and Shannon could argue). However, none of us know what’s happening, none of us can explain it, and none of us can provide Phil with the reassurance he needs in this instant. He finishes his last slider, departs the parking lot, and then listens to Shannon vent for a full 90 minutes about people who are unfamiliar to him and whom he will never care about. He gazes at the massive structure they just exited, featuring false Italian frescoes, luxurious marble bathrooms, hallways, conference rooms, and soundstages designed to mimic various opulent houses of worship. He ponders how it was constructed, why it shut down, and how a Christian enterprise could falter in an area filled with such establishments. He even jokes to himself, only partially facetiously, about how Jesus could depart so swiftly and completely just as Shannon leans in for a kiss.
